wow on two levels...one from your point of view...and the other from how close that boat is...very cool image.

The boat really brings the viewer into the picture. Will the waves wash it in too close the rock and the burning lava? The framing is really good, with the violent reds flaring below to show the entire formation of the smoke cloud. It's a great picture.

Thank you @Travis Rhoads . Actually you really can't put this in scale unless the boat is there. Sometimes I have to wait for a tour boat to get into the frame so I can document everything by scale. Also that boat is very big and shuttles up to 60 passengers. You can't even see how little they are in the boat. The explosions are huge. Thank you again. aloha

I gotta figure out that tag trick...nifty...

The boat does give a real sense of scale...typically I would prefer it without, but here it really does help.

@Travis Rhoads, Yes and sometimes trying to get them out of the shot is irritating and especially when the activity is happening.

Great photo Tom, I am beyond excited to be visiting that area early next month. How close can I/you get to this vantage point and do you have a focal legnth recommendation?

Very nice. Great composition. Very unique. Wonderful capture. Including the boat really adds a lot by providing scale.

Since I can never leave well enough alone, I'd suggest some experimenting by cropping the image somewhat to put the hottest part of the bomb at the lowest right hand 1/3 1/3 intersection and to remove some of the dark rock and part of the sky/steam cloud--or, better said, to make the bomb a larger part of the image. And very slightly increasing the exposure to relieve some of the darkness and show more of the color--but not light enough so that the surroundings compete with the hot spot.

However, in any case, this is a special image.
