p.1 #1 · p.1 #1 · Shays Run West Virginia Waterfalls

These images are all along Shays Run, a stream located in Blackwater Falls State Park, West Virginia. Only the first waterfall has an official name, Elakala Falls. This was the first time I had taken waterfall photos at such cold (12 degrees) temperatures and found out that there are additional challenges to be met at such cold temps around water. As a reminder, the color of the water is influenced by tannin which is how Blackwater Falls got its name. Any suggestions for improvement are always welcome...Kevin

Kevin - absolutely beautiful images. I pick the first one as my favorite. And now I'll explain why. Living in the south, I do understand what you mean when you talk about tannin stained water. For this reason, I think tannin stained waters are better photographed in the spring, summer, and fall when you have complimentary colors to go with the tannin color. The first image "minimizes" the effect of the tannin color and makes for a scene that we expect to see when we see winter scenes - mostly white.

That said, I think that if you would color correct (or incorrect, I guess ) the tannin stained running water so that it would be whiter, all of the images would be greatly improved. I say this only because of the way it looks compared to the whiteness of the overall scene. In any other season, I probably would not say anything about it.

BTW - you are one tough dude to stand in that cold running water to capture those images!!

Thanks very much Jim. This was my first time here in the snow and I agree about the other seasons probably being more complimentary to the water color. I normally don't significantly alter the color in any given image as I like to present the scene as I saw it. I will however play around with changing the "whiteness" of the water just to see how it looks. I think you are probably right in that it will look better.

I would say I didn't feel very tough, especially on the climb out! Thanks again for the good suggestions.

These are outstanding, Kevin. And since I know exactly where you took these, I know you were not only standing in the cold rushing flow, but in a couple cases on the brink of a rather spectacular tumble should you have slipped. That's gutsy in any season!

I also tend to leave the tannin color, even though I think it is less aesthetically attractive (in any season), just because it is part of the nature of the stream. However I'll admit that I often brighten the falls to deemphasize it, or convert to black and white whihc makes it moot.

Wonderful shots. My favorites are #3 and #5 (I agree with removing the tannin color . #2 could benefit from a tighter crop IMO.
