p.1 #1 · p.1 #1 · RX1 - is there a good, hood-friendly CPL?

After getting some dust removed from a great camera repair shop (Sanford Camera Repair in Arlington,MA), and now recovering from my second knee replacement, my mind is turning towards my photography futire. The RX1 was purchased here from a member with a full set of accessories (batts, chargers, grip, hood, and EVF!). Living in VERY SUNNY Colorado, I never, ever shoot without a hood outdoors, and rafely ever shoot with a good CPL. Has anyone come across an excellent CPL that is slim enough to where it can still be used or adjusted with the hood on?

I currently have tried a slim design (and lower quality) Hoya that is very hard to use a hood with and impossible to adjust. And the filter itself is not good. So, anyone have a better option that is also hood-friendly?

Also, did I read somewhere that the focal length of the RX1 is closer to a 32 or 33mm?

One solution would be to attach your normal 49mm polarizer and than use a 49 to 37mm step-down ring as your "hood".

That is a huge step down... 12mm, or 1/4th the total regular filter diameter. How bad is the vignetting?

There is zero vignetting. FM members are using a 49-37 step down ring as a hood since the RX1 was first released. It works great blocking side light strays while keeping the lens very compact. I use it with my ND filters sometimes.

Wow. That is going to be so nice, small, amd discrete. Thanks so much! Any input on the focal length being a touch off from 35mm? It just feels a touch wide to me.

I remember reading a review of the first gen RX1 indicating it was actually about 32mm, definitely not 35. And while I can't confirm the exact field of view, I remember testing the first RX1 against an X100S and the RX1 was notably wider on all of the back to back shots I did. I currently have a Nikon with a couple of 35mm lenses and the RX1 is clearly wider than those too.

I'm personally more comfortable with 28mm than 35 and was always a bit pleasantly surprised at how well I got along with the RX1, but I think the wider than expected lens probably has something to do with it.

Yes, it should work great with your polarizer as long as it has a 49mm thread.
From my own tests, the Sonnar 35/2 is closer to 35mm than 28mm. It's around ~ 33mm without any corrections...

Remember to buy a 37mm front cap for it.

I use a Heliopan collapsible rubber hood and a 49-52 step-up ring on my RX1. The hood is attached to the lens, and the step-up ring is attached to the inside of the hood.To install and adjust my 52mm B+W MRC polarizer, I collapse the hood and attach the polarizer to the step-up ring. The step-up ring provides enough extension beyond the collapsed hood to make attachment and adjustment of the filter quite easy. Once the polarizer is adjusted, I pop the hood back to shooting position. The hood and step-up ring are always attached to my lens, so they also provide a level of constant protection for the front element. It's a solution that has worked well for me for four years now.
