p.1 #1 · p.1 #1 · A6000 hot mirror removal

Long story short: My a6000 spent 36 hours at the bottom of the lake. I took it all apart, dried it out for 2 weeks, put it back together and amazingly it still works.

Only problem is there is a 1-2mm round spot on the sensor. It's either below the hot mirror filter or possible inside the actual sensor silicon. I'm thinking about removing the hot mirror filter and just leaving the sensor naked.

Has anyone done this? Does it ruin the colors when outdoors if I don't replace it? Thanks!

Removing the hot mirror will alter colour balance drastically. Without it the camera will see visible light, infrared light and a bit of UV, all at the same time. In addition the camera will become slightly "near sighted" without the hot mirror, i.e. the sensor cover. So, you need it for normal photography, and the camera needs a repair to remove whatever is under the cover glass. The cover glass/hot mirror can be removed and replaced again.

A related subject is IR modifications, where the hot mirror is replaced with a cover glass that only transmits infrared light.

Done that to a NEX-6, and later added a Baader UV-cut filter.

Yes, color would be affected, and infinity focus too. If you shoot in daylight, with custom WB, color is different but acceptable for ordinary use. If you shoot night cityscape, WB usually need to set to a be rather extreme side. Also, one color channel is more easy to blow out so it might be a good idea to under-expose a bit.

Ah, interesting. Thanks guys. I've seen plenty of IR conversions but not many before/after from just removing the hot mirror.

I was able to remove and clean both sides of the hot mirror and the bare sensor without too much difficulty. After doing this to a camera I'd written off I don't see why people are so scared of touching their sensor.
