I am planning on my first visit to Yosemite and would like to hear some advice from FMers. I am most interested in shooting at Valley View during the first snow. Should I shoot it during or after the snow? Which focal length of the lens is best cover the entire scene? ect. Any advice or suggestions are welcome and appreciated. Thank you.

Henry

Definitely try and shoot during the storm and immediately right after. The storm and clouds can clear out quite fast in the valley. Also, as soon as the sun starts to hits the snow-covered tress in the early morning, the snow starts to drop off the trees fast.

I would go out in the meadows, especially over by Ahwanee while it is snowing. Bring a telephoto lens also, as the clouds dancing between the cliffs edges make for some dramatic photos.

During the winter storm season, Yosemite is great for B&W photography. So if that interests you, plan for shooting B&W scenes.

I think you need 16mm (FF) to cover the scene adequately, though you may get by with a 24mm (FF).

If you're a bit flexible with your location Tunnel View is a good place to wait out a storm. It gives you visibility over much of the valley. When storms first clear there is often a lot of low cloud and atmospherics going on. The higher vantage can help you plan where you need to be next. If Valley View is your only target you can just wait there but you might miss part of the show. You really do want to be there while it's snowing and as it clears.
