p.1 #1 · p.1 #1 · Kanab Point shining high over the Grand Canyon

I made it out to the Grand Canyon again this year after missing it for 3 or 4 summers. This time I visited Kanab Point. This is one of the more remote overlooks, down the same road as Toroweep but a whole level of rock higher. The road here is ridiculously twisted and I felt like I was driving figure eights around every tiny juniper tree.
I didn't really get sunset but was up and ready for sunrise. It's a glorious sight to see the Grand Canyon light up piece by piece as the sun comes over the horizon. Huge stone towers are right below the point and it was these towers that I watched as the sun came up. This shot captures the magic moment when there is still a sunburst of light but enough of the sun has risen to reflect off the towers in the foreground.

Gordon,
Great catch of light. Love the color & depth (especially "down" )
I visited Toroweap two years ago & can't wait to go back.
Is this past the turn off to there?

Thanks for posting

Dan

The turnoff to Kanab Point happens on the left on the drive to Toroweap. I found the way using GPS and frankly went off on a couple roads I thought might be correct and they were not. There are no signs. Many of the roads will eventually cross paths someway further down the road as these dirt roads are a cobweb network. I wondered if I were on the wrong path. But I knew I was still goign in the correct direction. I kept wondering if I'd cross into a larger and better road but I didn't.
Out on the point I met the ranger. I spoke with him about the road and questioned whether there was a better way or a different road. He said there was not. The road is really hard to follow and I wondered if I was on a real road or just an unofficial path that went nowhere.
If you go, take a GPS, refer to it often and realize there is no fast way there. There's no good way.
