In the last few winters I've been able to confirm that the parents from the local nest have stayed for the winter instead of the usual migration south. I suppose one reason is that their territory includes the only portion of the Yukon River that doesn't freeze up because it is below the dam. Also there has been an increase in eagles staying for the winter as the earth warms. Most feed at the dump as far as I can gather
Yesterday I round one of the parents perched on a nice frosty evergreen a little ways before getting to the nest. Usually by Jan or Feb I start to see them rebuilding the nest so I will check on that when I return home in Jan.
Here are 5 shots from yesterday. I've included one to show the landscape and the dam. Also to show the poor shape of the nest that needs rebuilding soon.

There is something special about eagles in evergreens that has some snow and frost and you pix capture that so well...the greenery, the white snow, the blue sky....I can hear the eagle calling...fabulous.

Great winter stuff. Is that dam on the Yukon River.
It does look cold there now.
Don
Thanks Don. Yes the dam is on the Yukon river which has created what we call Schwatka Lake above it (top of the photo) You can see the open section towards the back. The large area eddy type area is all frozen in the foreground.
The dam has taken away the reason for the towns name. There was an area of very strong rapids where the lake is now that had large enough foaming waves that they looked like white horses. The gold miners traveling through dreaded this stretch of river and I think were glad they had arrived in town after crossing this area. Today they'd only have to deal with getting through the dam

Geoff,
The eagle photos are beautiful. The landscape is stunning. The light is gorgeous and has a feel of the cold. The headlights of the cars also tell the lack of sunlight. Interesting to see a few couples taking a walk.

Thanks for the recent history of these Eagles and their nest, compelling narrative.
Thanks also for the pics of both the nest in disrepair, and the beautiful landscape as they set the context so well.
Each of the first three pics are very cool... #1 is superb Geoff, I love everything about it just as presented.
