It was cold on Sunday when I spent a couple hours lying on the snow shooting birds....but that is nothing compared to the temps we are seeing today and I will be back on the river tomorrow at about -30C for some more shots of the frozen birds. By Saturday if I dare venture out it will be -38C.....But the colder it gets the more they put up with me
Juvi Trumpeter...I really hope he heads south soon
American Dipper riding the rapids
Bufflehead flapping (e-bird rarity for this time of year)
Brrrrr! How they manage to stand that freezing water is beyond me...great shots and stay warm this weekend...you need all your fingers....and most of your toes
Eric
I love both swan photos and the water in the air in the second is cool. Getting down low as you did might be the warm place with the show being at freezing and the wind above you. In any case Hawaii sounds a lot more plesent.
Amazing set, Geoff! I especially like the Swan photos depicting the ice covering their bodies. After viewing I need a hot cup of tea, or maybe something stronger!
Brrrr! I am shivering just by looking at the pictures. We think it is cold here in SoCal when the temps dipped into some 10 centigrades a few days ago . Excellent images, Geoff but the first one is just lovely with subtle colors that convey the mood/cold temperature perfectly.

Thanks Eric. I will try to stay warm...could probably give up a few toes and maybe a few fingers on the left hand but I will take precautions to prevent loss of limb. On the other hand (pun intended) if I lost a few maybe I could collect disability and shoot every day!!
Really cool set Geoff, props to you for braving the conditions to get these unique shots.
The Trumpeter pics are my favorites... #1 is excellent. Very well done.
Wow, great images of challenging conditions for the birds (and you). The ice on the swans is quite something. I would have thought they would all have gone south by now.

Do you do something to stay warm other than dress in layers?

Man O Man, props to you Geoff, for being out in the inclement weather. Like to see a shot of how you dress for it ..
I guess their not snow birds, we have plenty down here this time of the year
(the Human version)
The ice on the swans speaks for itself ... We go out to the outdoors for our enjoyment, but these poor guys have to endure everyday.
Nice work !!
Thanks guys.
As for dressing for the cold...basically layers is what I do. Only other thing is disposable hand warmers in my gloves. Really the only thing that gets cold (and sometimes very painful) are my fingers as the heat pack only puts out enough heat to warm my palm. I keep the hot pack right against the skin which can be very hot when its outputting its max. I usually have to take a few min break to tuck my fingers into my palms to warm them up.
Today is -26C and I will head out around 10:30....that is when the sun is finally out.... The current conditions here is called "Ice Crystals" so there should be some nice frost on everything...maybe I'll go hunting hawk owls so I can spend most of the time in the car!!
