p.1 #1 · p.1 #1 · Autumn at the Subway

I shot this Subway image midway through the first week of November. Its a bit of a pain in the ass of a hike but in the end I always enjoy my times down in the Left Fork. This was my forth time at the Subway and every time I go I discover different comps. Here's a new comp for me that i thought was worthy of keeping. I flipped the tripod column and had my camera about 6' off the sandstone floor (upside down) which allowed me to leverage the beautiful maple and cottonwood leaves as the main foreground of the image. The low position also assisted with capturing the cyan/blue reflections of the bluebird sky above.

Thoughts?

Kane

Your comp works extremely well with the leaves. Did you focus stack?
The framing really enhances the impression of a tunnel bore.

I've encountered photographers who refuse to visit the Subway because they consider it a cliché. Their loss. I prefer your approach of considering it a compositional challenge. It's a GREAT hike, even if you leave your camera at home!

Yes, its a focus stack at f16. I think the bore is f13 and the leaf area at 16. Just two images. Agreed, it is a great hike but its certainly not for everybody. Everytime I'm in there I pass a bunch of folks heading in but never see them again. But that last half mile is loaded with excellent scenes.

Very unique not a run of the mill composition for sure. The colors are fantastic

Hey Kane,

This is a nice one, especially with the leaves spread out like that. I think you meant that you had your camera 6" above the ground and not 6' right?

Really nice with the leaf colors, Kane. It feels maybe just a tiny bit tight on the left with the subway itself. I like the depth that inclusion of the right mid ground canyon wall curve gives.

Monika, I noticed the slight cramped feel on the far left so how does this 5:4 version feel?

Both have their prospective plusses and minuses. Great work as always Kane!

I prefer the original, that extra glow on the rocks on the left really adds a lot and gives a sense of the unique structure...it frames that side well, great image BTW...very nice.

Kane, I liked that curve w/orange glow on the left. The 3 curves give a nice symmetry. Was kind of wishing you'd rotated the camera (or had another frame) a bit left.

Hi Kane,
This is superb. Personally, I prefer the framing of the first.

Nice work as usual Kane. I like the first photo better, but I would agree, that I would like to see just a little bit more to the left. But this is also coming from a guy that is still not sold on any of his own comps from the subay...

Can't beat the subway, its always a fun hike. I don't think it would be a "pain in the ass" if you didn't have to ascend the canyon wall at the very end to get back to the car, to me that's the only "bad" part...
