Louie Chapman is there right now, and I believe a couple other FMers. He said conditions are perfect right now, so looks to be a good time to make the trip!
I so much wanted to visit that place in January of 2015. We went on a driving trip and purposely made our way to that area. We woke up in Oklahoma city with a ¼ inch of ice on the streets. When we got to Albuquerque there was no hot water in the hotel because the pipes froze. The next day when were supposed to go it was a complete whiteout when we drove past it. We even booked the tour van. Maybe next time.
I had a private workshop client there last weekend, and just spent Monday through Friday there with a larger workshop group. The refuge is in good shape but bird numbers are modest, perhaps due to the warm fall (our first freeze in Albuquerque was a month later than usual). There is a decent number of cranes, surprisingly few geese, and a huge number of Pintails. All in all we had some great photo opportunities during both workshops!

Thought I'd add. Just before we left Oklahoma city my wife asked if it was safe. Of course I answered "oh yeah, we Canadians know how to handle this". Within a mile there was a semi in the ditch, burnt to the frame with emergency vehicles all around. It took a while to dig her fingers out of the dashboard. I had to get to Albuquerque.

Being a western Canadian I can handle extreme snow but when it comes to ice like in the east I stay away!!

There were quite a few vehicles in the ditches that day and I concluded it was just inexperience which is no fault to anyone who lives there. You can't slam on the brakes but I think most were from changing lanes too quickly. You have to do that very gradually when icy. Sorry for hogging this thread everyone. It was a memorable trip and we still talk about it. Phoenix, Sedona and old Santa Fe. We found the spot where Ansel Adams took Moonrise Over Hernandez.
looking forward to being there ...Wednesday and Thursday...my 5th time....keeping my fingers crossed for lots of birds and good weather...but who knows

When isthe gathering of the cranes festival? I'll try to hit it later in January if the roads are dry I'll take the Motorhome and trailer up to Abq and either stop on the way up or back.
Thanks for posting about this, I never heard of Bosque del Apache before. I looked at the website and I can see why it would be a popular place. Being from the east coast, it might be tough to schedule a trip there, but for now I can live vicariously through the photos the rest of you post!

I live in NC and this was my 3rd trip
Airfare was $200, car $200 and motels in Socorro are cheap (and not too good, I'm being kind)

I should have added having two kids and a wife who would not agree I need a week away by myself, and taking them with me I would not get much photography in .
