p.1 #1 · p.1 #1 · African Safari with Fuji system

I am currently using Pentax 645z for Studio and some serious landscape works. Everything else I am using Fuji system which I love. The lenses I have now are some primes and couple of zooms up to 50-140. I plan to have a week-long trip to Safari next year and I am thinking about adding a Fuji 100-400 with a 1.4 extender. Just wondering if anyone brought Fuji system to Safari and what is your experience. I am not a serious wildlife photographer but safari trip is not an easy trip you can go easily so I’d like to take some decent wildlife shots. Do you think Fuji system should be fine or I need to go back to DSLR (used Canon before) for the trip?
Thanks!

I think Fuji would be more than fine. I have read mixed reviews on the 100-400....not the typical high praise as most Fuji lenses get. A fuji crop body with 50-140 and 1.4TC on that might be enough but I've never been to Africa and I understand it depends on where you are going and if it is private reserve or not for how much focal length you need.

What body of Fuji are you using? I would say any would do for most animals but the X-T2 would be best for any action you might find. Of course if you want bird shots then the 100-400/1.4 would be needed.

I wold not be surprised if the complaints about the 100-400 are because many people think you can rely on stabilization to make up for good teknique. That dose not cut it with a long lens.

Depending on where you are at. I just returned from MalaMala Main camp. I took a 300mm 2.8 lens with a 1.4 TC{Nikon} and a 600mm f4 Nikon lens. I never got the 600 out one time and most of the time the 300mm without the TC was more than enough. Our ranger put us so close to the animals that sometimes the 300 was too much lens. We saw all the animals and lots of them. We saw a lion kill, lioness with 2 cubs and a cheetah kill following him for about 45 minutes through the bush with lots of photo opps before the kill, and then a leopard with cubs. This is there summer and the temps were between 85 to 95 degrees. We had overcast mornings with the sun coming through around 1PM, but, no rain. The only animal that we could not get close to was the hippo because of the danger they present. It was a great trip with stops in Victoria Falls, Cape Town and Johannesburg. Food was excellent at the Main Camp.
