p.1 #1 · p.1 #1 · A7Sii Internal Battery Problems?

Hi guys,

I have an A7Sii I bought new in April this year and immediately I've noticed that whenever temperatures get to around -10, -15°C and below (about 15°F and below), and I leave my camera sitting outside on my tripod in those temperatures, or colder, that when the camera powers off automatically after two minutes, and I wake it up, that the entire thing resets. As in I have to reselect the language, the time, all of that process... This can't be normal? Has anyone else had this problem?

Thanks!
Sean

I Suggest you charge a battery in the camera.

I have an A7II and its internal battery is charged by Charging a removable one in camera. Not sure if this applies to the A7SII but you could check the shipped charger and if it needs the camera to work you may have the solution.

I try and charge by camera about every 6 months just to be sure.

Hope this helps.

Unfortunately, this is a known issue. At least on A7RII bodies (and perhaps others?). In fact, I first discovered this shooting in your city - Yellowknife! It was very cold though - around -46C. After shooting for a bit, the internal battery would die and cause the camera to reset everything. Very annoying to say the least. In the -15-20C range, I haven't really had this issue (yet). Anything below -20 it would happen very often. I even tried having around 6 hand warmer packs strapped all around the body. No real cure that I know of but this winter I am going to hook up an external battery pack to see if that helps. Let us know how you make out....

My A7II does something similar, but not quite the same: Sometimes when I change the battery in cold weather I have to re-enter the clock related settings (not language etc. though) and it is somewhat annoying as it tend to happen at the least opportune moment or when my fingers are icy cold. Before this I used A7 for almost two years in all sorts of weather without this issue, so this internal battery problem must have appeared with the newer models.

Yes this is a known fail. I hit this limitation tens of times during the last winter. Always subzero conditions, always when changing the battery. R2 was the body. It helps if you tape chemical heatpack around the grip but that is another..well...bubblegum fix. It gets you maybe 15 seconds more time to swap the battery. When powering the camera with USB powerpack I never ran into this issue.

Who knows if that -46C adds another fail barrier Powerpack was enough for me to keep it running but ~ -35C was about the coldest temps I came by with R2. HelenaN wrote that mk1 models may not have the issue and now that I think of it, I might have witnessed the same - A7r1 did not do this when I shot it cold weather a in December 2014. Instead, the back display froze @ -32C or so after being exposed to the cold long enough. EVF kept working still.

Very interesting replies. I've charged the camera up via USB to see if this helps things along a little bit - time will tell. Thanks for all the help/confirmation everyone. Much appreciated for sure.

Thanks. I will be testing the A7R as well in very cold weather this winter....

And for those wanting to try powerpack in cold, put it in a wool sock, stuff chemical heater or two in there and tape the whole package to tripod. Instant win!
