p.1 #1 · p.1 #1 · Where's the Ice? Polar bear, Churchill Manitoba

Just back from a superb trip to Churchill. Was expecting/hoping for cold weather but instead had most days above the freezing mark. This late into November, it's not a good sign. No ice in the bay. The bears need the ice to hunt seals. Without ice, no seals. This image does depict some snow but most of it was gone a few days later.

More images to follow as I get to them.

Hope everyone is doing well.

I like this, Henrik. Nice atmosphere, and of course the polar bear. I agree the warmth and lack of ice is troubling. We did the situation no favors on Nov. 8. Sigh.

Looking forward to seeing the other. Global Warming is a real growing threat.

Very compelling portrait (and a somber lesson in natural history).

Thanks for posting.

Excelent image Henrik. No ice is scary yet it's not the first time the earth was this warm

Another way of looking at this is if there is more ice the bears would be further from shore and further from photographers?

Excellent image Henrik. I'm in Alaska right now and its 8C and raining every day....usually I have snow to photograph the eagles. Times are a changing....

That would be one way of looking at it....although I'd say a fairly short sighted way. In a few years there may be none of these bears to photograph.

Getting to them slowly. And for polar bears in particular, it's not good news.

Thanks Morris. While that may be true, it has occurred in natural cycles in the past - unless of course one is to deny that we as a species now contribute significantly to it.

Thanks bud. Indeed they are. I spoke to some of the locals up there and they couldn't recall seeing a November like this.
