A dead sea lion lying on the beach draws a lot of attention very quickly. Driving by the dead carcass I only saw a few sea gulls and ravens having their way. Luckily I was driving very slowly and noticed a coyote’s face staring at me from the dune grass, so I drove a bit further and turned around and came back in time to catch some feeding action by the coyote.

The next morning, I was there very early in hopes of catching more action but after waiting 20 minutes or so nothing so I started down the beach and I didn’t get far at all before out of the dune grass came two coyotes. At first they didn’t appear to be bothered by my presence, they came within about 50 yards and then turned and high tailed it for the grass. Sorry for the long story and a bit of gore but I thought I had to add it to tell the story.

Thanks Sharona. You never know what causes these deaths but sea lions and seals watch up on the beach during the fall and winter months quite regularly, they're either sick or have been hurt in the surf. But once they are on the beach it doesn't take long for a predator to take care of them.

Nice work! Since I don't live near the ocean I never had considered that coyotes would be hunting or scavaging on a beach. Thanks for sharing your images (and expanding my horizon some).
