The streaked horned lark (Eremophila alpestris strigata) is a subspecies of the horned lark that is endemic to the Pacific Northwest. It prefers sparsely vegetated open habitat and has suffered greatly due to habitat loss. It is believed that only about 800-1000 individuals are present today and it has been classified as a Threatened Species in 2013.

Broughton Beach in Portland is one of the places to reliably see this bird. Here are a couple of shots, taken with the 7D2 and the 500/4 II. Thanks for looking!

Thank you very much, Morris! I was sitting on the ground with my feet in front of me and the lens resting on my knee. There was a rather brisk breeze and being able to steady the lens really helped.

Thanks, Rex! Yes, I liked that one as well. The 2nd one unfortunately didn't have the eye in the right position and despite my efforts to brighten it in post, simply looks too dark.

How do you tell the streaked horned larks from the others?

Thank you all!

Stephen, I believe the male streaked horned larks have some reddish streaks behind the neck. They aren't visible necessarily in my photos - perhaps they only appear in the breeding season, I don't know. But that's the difference. They are very similar otherwise. I think the females are virtually indistinguishable.
