Many landscape photographers would travel to Botany Bay Plantation on Edisto Island near Charleston, South Carolina to capture images of the few trees that are in the water at high tide. Early reports are that only one tree survived Hurricane Matthew.

We spent a week in Charleston in May of 2014 and Botany Bay at high tide was my first priority location. This is one of my favorite images from that trip.

Sadly, this eloquent beauty no longer exists. It is now a victim of Hurricane Matthew.

Hey Tex,

As much as we hate to see some things disappear, there is something to be said for having a shot of something that no longer exists. This is a nice one for sure!

Nice shot Tex!
This is sad news indeed. Where did you hear this news? I had searched shortly after Matthew passed but couldn't find anything specific. I have reservations at the camp ground for next June but I'm not even sure our campsite still exist.

Thankfully I have many wonderful shots of the Spirit Tree. I'll have to revisit them soon now that it's gone forever. Matter of fact, I've been using one of them as my avatar for some time now.

Dave:

Keith and Tiffany Briley, from Charleston Photography Tours, live there. They told me only one tree remains and that this one is gone.

Sad indeed.

That is sad. Botany sure is a unique beach. They guard that beach like fort knox to make sure none ever takes any sea shells or drift wood. It's a beautiful place. Oh, and I just realized my avatar isn't the Spirit Tree but rather from another area just south of Edisto called the Bone yard on Hunting Island.

I was here a few years ago and have a photo of the same tree. I was wondering about their current status with storms that hit there. Really sad to hear that it's gone but I expected that it wouldn't be standing for much longer. Beautiful shot you captured here though. Simple and peaceful. Did you post a panorama of this some time back?

No, I did not produce a panorama of this location. Must have been someone else.

Wish I had thought of it while I was in the moment!

An instant classic! Nice work, sad to hear about the loss of these trees but I guess nothing lasts forever.

Hi Tex,

Your chosen angle on the tree, the simple composition, and the chosen points of contrast all work very well. Beautifully done!
