p.1 #8 · p.1 #8 · A hodgepodge of 19 unusual shots.
8. Barred Owls are a mortal enemy of Robins, as they steal their chicks from the nest. Alarm calls from Robins in the forest usually indicate danger from owls, other raptors, squirrels, and raccoons.
11. Two Great Blue Herons having a territorial fight. They will fight each other, but will not defend their chicks when Bald Eagles snatch them from their nests.
16. The Virginia Rail is an elusive bird that spends most of its time hidden in the cattails of our pond. It was a couple of years before I even got a good look at one flying from one group of cattails to another. With their short wingspan, they don’t appear to be good flyers as their behinds usually bounce off the water when flying across the pond. Lucky to get this shot.
18. Another bird, Ring-necked Pheasant, that is usually elusive and hides in thickets and tall grass. I guess this young male was feeling aggressive during mating season, as it would run out on the road and attack wheels of passing cars. It met its demise a few days later by getting run over by a car.
