This has been a great thread! I read rumors of the a9. From there I find the A99II. The A99m1 has been on my radar for a while as I have heard pretty good things about it. The a99II looks very impressive. I currently shoot with an a7 and an a7II adapted with LA-EA3/4 adapters to A-mount lenses. I also have a few FE lenses and one Canon lens (FD 85 1.2 L...who can argue with me, such a great lens!) I can't bring myself to sell out and switch to Canon because I believe that in a few years Sony mirrorless will be a major player in the market. I'd hate to sell then have to reinvest. The A99II seems like a good way to bridge that gap for a few years. The professional level camera my growing business needs until the mirrorless system proves itself a little more versatile. The ax series is fantastic but isn't nearly as versatile as dedicated professional dslr's. Just adding a focus point joystick would be a more important improvement than a higher px sensor. As for the a9, if there is anything I've learned about Sony, it's that they are VERY good at slowly releasing products so that they can entice every last penny from the market. I see so many who have bounced from camera to camera. Just the a6xxx line proves my point. Every 6 months a new model of that camera is released. It's not like they just randomly forgot to add IBIS to the a6300. That was tactfully released to leave the consumer wanting more. This also makes me think the a99II is the last hora for a-mount. Still, the a99II has charmed me. Can I earn enough from it to not be investing further into e-mount for the next few years, or will I regret not having a full arsenal of e-mount glass when a truly work friendly e-mount camera is released?

This is Sony, trying to predict what their game plan is based on the release of the A99II might be somewhat premature because it is based on the assumption that they have one. If it's a big success, A mount will come alive again. If not, it will go back to sleep. They seem to like pushing a technology, seeing how the market responds and make a plan based on that rather than the other way round. The A7r was a prime example of this. A technological achievement, somewhat half finished and underdeveloped (I'm sure no photographer testing it would ever have allowed those ergonomics!) but put out there to see what happens. It takes the world by storm and we have the FE mount success story. The A99II has already far outstripped their initial assumptions for demand. If it continues in this way, I wouldn't write off the A mount all too soon.

Market innovators can never be certain how dramatically non-mainstream products will be received. It's the downside to doing things differently to the established players, who face the exact opposite problem - innovating away from a successful product line risks alienating users who are rusted on to your bread and butter business. Photographers as a group tend to be averse to change. Small, often trifling things upset many of them, let alone significant paradigm shifts which can be tremendously threatening. It's great to have a wide range of choice, however, which only arrives from the efforts of future-oriented innovators. As Sony achieved great market success with the a7r, they made very many people happy - and happy people tend not to broadcast their contentment. cheers.

you loved the a99
you already have the lenses
buy the a99ii...
as youve said, it will last you 3 - 4 years of bliss, while FE matures more and any short comings it may have are hopefully imprved upon by then

i just preordered a99ii and will be selling off my a7rii and a bunch of lenses
i had only gotten it because the a99ii didnt seem like it was coming!
i spent the entire time wishing it had better ergonomics, even if it was larger, and better buffer, faster speed, a 135 lens, tho i do love the dedicated exposure comp dial. and that 55/1.8 is magic feeling. and when i DO want a small camera, its handy. but ill just keep the rx1 and the a99ii and used a77ii i bought for emergency a mount backup.

edit

oops! im late to the game! howd this thread only get to 2 pages before you pulled the trigger?! lol

I think there will be some canikon users that prefer the heavy duty feel and speed of the a99II that have been sitting on the fence. I went from 5d3 to an a7r2 and was always missing that solid feel. A few hundred grams means nothing to me where as being able to have a robust platform means plenty. I also for some reason find the rendering of the A mount zooms and primes much more pleasing than anything i've tried in E-mount and I've pretty well owned every e-mount lens to date besides the 24-70gm. I really doubt that many Canikon users will migrate to A mount; even if you think the A99ii is better than Canikon cameras (and that's going to be controversial) there just isn't the ecosystem of lenses that Canikon offers. Of course there isn't with E mount either, but there's the plausible promise of it in E mount, plus some of the existing E mount lenses are better than the Canikon alternatives (whereas there are only a couple of A mount lenses preferable to their Canikon alternatives). The Zeiss A zooms were outstanding for their time, but trumped by Mk II and now Mk III (16-35) Canon zooms. Ditto the original G zooms. Ditto the primes, except - maybe - the two different by great 135s. Just for example. Whereas E is competitive or better.

While the a7rii is much more mature than the first a7, it's still not as mature as older DSL (and a-mount) systems. And it's aimed at a different market. A mount has the ZA 135, 85, Minolta 85, Minolta 80-200, Mino 100 f2 and long Minolta lenses/Sony lenses, in addition to the wicked good ZA primes and zooms if your shooting action or sports, or want robust batter/af/build, what's not to like? And e-mount lacks good tele primes right now beyond the 85s..esp af.

Plus, given how large some of the new E mount lenses are, you're not saving weight.

And you can still laitex other mounts, though obviously not as many as e-mount.

I think it's a good choice as the overlap is enough to not be completely redundant.

I know I'm probably in the minority, but I would like a a99iI + Za 85/Minolta 85 limited over the A7rii with the GM 85.

But if you're heavily a landscape or manual focus shooter, I'd go A7rii with small hq primes

Yes, so there is this demanded A9 out there but people like me with piles of A mount lenses, we can barely wait.

Focusing wise it is always better to use native mount lenses. Even adapted lenses, A mount performs marvelously better than other ones.
