And to think, I'm still totally impressed by and satisfied with my 5D3 and original 6D. So much so that I am skipping this generation, and maybe even the next.
More and more there will be people making the choice you are making. A decade ago the rate of improvement and change in digital cameras was much faster and the starting point had more deficiencies. But today the existing cameras already exceed the requirements of the great majority of the people using them and the improvements, while real, are both smaller and less significant in their effect on one's photography.
To be clear, that is't meant as any sort of indictment or criticism of camera manufacturers. To the contrary, they have generally done a fine job of building and improving their products. Its just that no new technology bubble can continue to to improve my gigantic increments forever.
I also skipped some generations recently and I'm happy with that. I held onto my 5DII for quite a while in modern camera terms before moving to a 5DsR. For most people, upgrading every new generation isn't going to make that much sense.

First, it isn't going to happen. No modern camera model is going to see its sensor resolution reduced. As if that's not obvious.
Second, the early Fujifilm cameras were 16MP with no AA filter and the results were excellent.

I'm hoping for an improvement in tracking AF. I don't need 5D4 performance, but I'd like better then the 6D has. My aging original 5D is in need of replacement soon, and I suspect the 6D will be that replacement once the price settles after a few months.
My guess? You'll be very happy with the upgrade.
