Hi Nick,

does Eye-AF really work for you? Maybe I'm missing something, but it doesn't work for me. I have TAP with the latest 6.0 firmware, AF-C on, Eye-AF assigned to AEL button like you, but I get an error message "not possible with this lens".

Are you sure you have pdaf with legacy lenses enabled?

Klaus, yes I believe so. To see if we're talking about the same thing, I've made a short video with my iPhone. If the quality is sufficient, you can see the focus lock on to the eye of the picture on my laptop screen (I didn't have a real model at my disposal on such short notice).

Yes, PDAF on, MF Assist on, AF-C
Face detection works, Eye-AF: "invalid with this lens".
Camera is A7R II. Eye-AF works with FE55 and other native AF-lenses.

The Techart FAQ thread states: "Eye-AF currently not supported."

Thanks for the video Nick,
your camera is A7R III. Could it be it works on the newer models A7R III and A9 but not on all the others?

Ah, sorry, I thought you were using R3

Yes my understanding is that eye af on A mount lenses (and thus on Techart which emulates A mount) is an A9 and A7r3 on,y feature...

Ah, OK then it must be an improvement in the R3. Does AF work in video mode now with TAP?

No idea sorry, I only ever use video on the camera as a way of making voice notes to myself...

Ive just updated to version 6, and I'm not impressed.
The TAP has always had the bad habit of not working very well away from the centre.
But it seems to have got worse in this respect than the previous version on the R2 on the couple of lenses I tried it on: unless the focus point is dead centre, it hunts without much success.
And I have no use for an AF system that forces me to focus and recompose!

Are others experiencing this behaviour?

I think the update was meant for a9/r3 users.

TAP has been poor in the focus area regard, still not very good, but v6 + R3 is much better than v5 + R2 IMO. Ete AF and face tracking seem to pick up outside the central areas better. Feels just as fast, maybe faster

It is indeed for a9/r3 users, but I was using r3

And it seems to me worse away from the centre than firmware 5 with the r2 which is what I was using before.

I have only tried two lenses (2.8/40 CV and C-Sonnar 1.5/50) though.
Also I may have forgotten how frustrating this behaviour is (I've basically gone back to only using MF with manual lenses with the R3 so haven't used my TechArt for a while, but thought that with the new firmware I'd try it)

For me the AF performance seems clearly improved on v6 + A9 vs. earlier firmware(s), no more "focus pulsing/hunting" and mostly focus is achieved very quickly and reliably in AF-C mode. In wide area mode with TAP, focus points from near centre seem to be picked most often, but it is pretty capable to focus on outer areas when I select other focus areas e.g. via touch focus, even when selecting areas near the corners (as far into corners as possible with touch focus). I mostly use TAP with CV 50/3.5 Heliar (VM) which is very sharp corner to corner at any aperture so probably that helps. It seems to focus well in near-corners here in the office (currently at work) as long as I keep the aperture wide open (f3.5) to allow enough light. Outdoors in daylight I mostly shoot this lens at f8 or f5.6 and go to f3.5 in low light.

I've been still getting many random restarts these past days I've been using TAP again though, but they don't bother me too much in casual use now.

I’ve never used wide area AF, only Movable point (all three sizes). And it is fine at centre, Ok one click of the joystick In any direction, further and it gives up. Maybe it’s lens dependent. The longer the lens the better it ought work off centre I guess...

I tend to shoot a lot of cityscape / street shots with TAP where I want everything in focus and basically wide area AF-C works well for that with this lens especially at f8 or f5.6. When I shoot close-ups and want to focus on some very specific object, touch focus works nicely and there's no need to change focusing mode. I don't use touch focus much with native AF lenses though but I like it with TAP.

I also have the 40/2.8 CV Heliar. I don't have C-Sonnar 50/1.5 but I do have Nokton 50/1.5 (VM). Will try with those later to see if there are significant differences in AF performance on my A9 with TAP.

On the wider lenses (e.g. 28mm) I don't like using TAP as much since there's often a need to adjust focus to get maximum corner-to-corner sharpness depending on lens / field curvature etc. and AF is not so good for that. I no longer have wider than 28mm M/LTM lenses. And long lenses often need pre-focusing when focusing close so for me ideal focal lengths with TAP are 40-50mm.

Remarkable! It seems so simple to design a TAP.
They have to reinvent the Sony firmware.

With firmware 6.0 on the A7R3, things got much improved.
It's at least usable now and works most of the time.

I still get the 'pumping' when using AF-C.
Continuous focus starts smoothly but often, TAP starts moving back and forward rapidly (pumping)...I don't think TAP works as well as when I used it on the A7R2.

So, it's improved since fw v5.0, which was unusable. but IMO it still needs adjustment.

I'm probably the last to report this, but I didn't see it in the FAQ... I noticed today that my EXIF data was showing the default focal length of 15mm for my TAP photos with the 7Artisans so that setting is not persistent across firmware updates.

Just installed FW v6.0 on my adapter. The pulsing issue on my A9 is now much, much reduced in AF-C and completely absent in AF-S. I haven't tested it extensively but I think that this camera with adapted Leica Summilux M lenses may be a pretty competent low-light AF'er... which when you think about it is kind of amazing - who would've guess that tiny little M-lenses could ever be taught to autofocus? Man...

TechArt is also replacing my first adapter after it gave up the ghost a few weeks ago, so I will soon have two.

I would like to mention a way for stopping camera battery drainage - just turn on the airplane mode in the camera. This mode seems not only cut the camera wireless connectivity, but also adapter's, which seems to be the cause of its constant energy consumption.
On the other hand, when firmware update is required, the airplane mode shall be turned off, otherwise the adapter's bluetooth connection will be disabled.

A while back when the drainage was really bad, I tested turning Airport mode "ON" but it didn't help. Perhaps with the latest firmware fixes, it now works. Thank for the tip, I will try it out.

I'd forgotten that I had Airplane mode turned on for some time, and it was on for the most recent FW update too.
