Thans for the explanation. I've now figured out what the problem is: If I press down the button, the camera only temporarily switches to MF, but no matter what I do with the toggle, it immediately resets to AF-S. How can I convince it to stay in MF (nice words didn't work)?

I feel like a rookie, despite having this camera since launch, but then again I usually just used the dial/function menu to switch into M mode with alt lenses.

Push the button to switch to MF. Then, flip the toggle to the down position.
Do you have the AF/MF button set to "AF/MF control toggle" in the custom keys menu #2 (under gear 7) ?

Thanks, after checking again, I realized that the key had been set so that it only stays in MF as long as the button is pressed. I had overseen the option that forces it to stay in MF just below. Thanks again. It works now.

Hi, short question:

is the IBIS working on the A7II when the TAP and a 50mm Leica lens are attached.
I have activated IBIS in the camera of course, but do to see any differences if I set IBIS on or off.

For the rest, the TECHARTPRO is an amazing product, and my favorite combo is currently a Leica Noctilux f1.0 V4, an A7II and the adapter.

Cheers from Germany

John

Perhaps you have a steady hand - Ibis will be working, provided that its switched on - I set it to automatically pickup the focal length, and assign the focal length by taking a shot with the aperture set as in the TAP instructions.

Pressing the Playback button to show a previously taken frame then pressing Up on the Control Wheel allows you to cycle through various views including one that shows four histograms as well as other information. The focal length recorded by the TAP should appear on this screen, just to the left of the histograms. As shipped from the factory, a focal length of 15mm will be recorded in the EXIF. The FAQ explains how to set a different focal length to be recorded in the EXIF (say 50mm) and also how to install and use the Android app to modify the factory default focal lengths.

There are three camera settings associated with IBIS: SteadyShot Adjust, SteadyS. Focal Len., and SteadyShot. You can assign these to Custom buttons and/or the Function Menu to control how IBIS works. When you have the camera set up to your satisfaction, I would suggest taking a series of handheld shots at progressively lower shutter speeds with IBIS turned off -- perhaps from 1/100 down to 1/10, if you're using a 50mm lens. Then repeat that process with IBIS turned on. You should definitely see the difference that IBIS makes.

I need an L-bracket for my new A7RII and I might as well get one that is compatible with my TAP. Checking the FAQ page for info on TAP-compatible L-brackets, I see the LB-A7M2 bracket on ebay is recommended. Will it fit my new A7RII? How good is the fit on the body, especially around the battery and port doors? Thanks!!

I have two LB-A7M2 brackets, both purchased from eBay seller foto4easy and the fit is good: no problems removing either the battery or memory card. However, while the rear (USB & HDMI) port door provides easy access, I found it impossible to open the front (audio) port door with the whole bracket attached. Irrelevant for me since I never shoot video. But as you can see from the photos on the linked product page, the vertical section of the bracket is detachable, so it can be easily removed while leaving the bottom plate fixed to the camera.

I notice that the same seller is offering what appears to be the same LB-A7M2 bracket for USD6 less than the ones I purchased but I have no experience with the cheaper item.

Note that, if you're using this L-bracket with the TAP, you'll also need to attach an Arca-Swiss plate to the L-bracket. This inexpensive Desmond DS-1 Bi-Directional Arca-Type QR Plate from B&H does the job.

Just received the adapter and updated to 4.0. Great adapter. I just found out that IBIS is obviously not working with the A7RII in 4K video mode. I am even not fully sure if it does work in photo-mode. Can somebody confirm this? Normal or do I have to take care about a special setting?

Figured out the IBIS function, great Adapter! Any experience so far concerning weather sealing / dust protection with the adapter?

It mounts to my camera bodies pretty tight and I haven't had any dust issues (though, I also use a rocket blower regularly). I wouldn't use it in the rain.

As soon as a new TAP arrives from B and H, I will send my wobbling one back for repair. I feel somewhat resolved to stay well below the weight limit, although the heaviest lens I used was a seldom mounted C/Y 35-70. I am very curious to see the longevity from those that regularly use lenses close to TAP's weight limit. Three of my favorite lenses to use on the A7RII are the ZM 35D, Leica 50 Summicron M, and Leica 90 Elmarit-M, and this is purely due to TAP. Prior, unless I was in a landscape situation on a tripod, I was pretty wedded to autofocus, underwhelmed by the drawing style of the 35 2.8 and 55 1.8. TAP has been a godsend, and I'm hoping the wobbling mount that developed so quick in my example is not that common.

I've read posts in this thread where TAP has trouble finding focus. However my problem with TAP operating my 35 ZM mounted on my A7Rii is that at least 50% of the time when I switch the camera on, the TAP is not even attempting to find focus while the camera is in AF mode. Other times at start up it will hunt (and usually find) focus, however at some point shortly afterwards it will stop trying to find focus - as though it's set to MF mode. Once that happens and I'm out and about shooting, I set the

Did you get anywhere with this? Ive had exactly the same issues with mine with the ZM 35mm. Is your replacement any better?

I was going to swap the TAP for a replacement that B&H offered to send, but at the last minute decided to get a refund, and instead I went with the Voigt adapter because using the ZM35 in MF started to grow on me. It felt organic and connected me to picture taking like I've never felt before.

Over the last few months I've regularly used my TAP with a Zeiss 100/2 ZF.2 (listed at 660g) and Nikon-M adapter. I haven't felt the adapter come loose/wobble at all. Everything is in order. I do try to support the lens with my hand when shooting, however I do frequently walk around with the camera gripped in one hand by the body, with no support to the lens. A side note on the adapter in general when using longer lenses - in critical moments where I can manual focus, I still prefer my own focusing but the adapter has allowed me to use it in much more demanding situations where manual focus would have missed the action.

It's been nearly four months since this FAQ was first posted (on September 28, 2016) and it's been wonderful to observe FMers figuring out how to make best use of the TAP with an astonishing variety of focal lengths and lens mounts. Or, alternatively, to come to the entirely valid conclusion that the TAP doesn't work for their particular use case. To each his, or her, own. For the sake of simplicity and consistency, I've settled on using the TAP with 50mm M and LTM lenses. Even so, the ability to autofocus so many different kinds of MF lenses remains magical.

I have sold mine for now. Mostly because it's more me than the TAP. I seem to do a couple things that I should not do and it's just old habit. I tend to take it off infinity or forget to put it back to infinity. Another is im experimenting with these new lens correction filters or close up lenses that are correcting corners in some lenses. But the biggy is I still like to manual focus these RF lenses. I have my native AF glass but when it's for me and not clients I like to take over. Will see maybe new improved version will come to market as well. I think it's a great product so don't get me wrong. It's just all in my head thing. If that makes sense

I think I'm going to sell the Voigtlander 15 ii that I bought to use with the TAP, as it continues to work poorly with it. I know MF wouldn't be a problem (and it's a nice lens), but my 12mm Touit fills my UWA needs, so it was an unnecessary purchase anyway.

Other than that, I continue to be happy with the TAP's performance on all the 35-60mm lenses I've been using it with. I haven't tested it on the longer (135+) focal lengths yet.

Re: TAP and L-brackets (as quoted below):

This works well, with an added Arca plate under the LB-A7M2 bracket. When you're using the camera in horizontal/landscape orientation with the added plate, you're no longer using the L-bracket's own slots to engage the clamp – you're using the slots of the plate instead. The plate adds enough elevation so the TAP won't bump into your ballhead clamp and keep it from engaging.

There is, however, a second way. I first used the SunwayFoto PSL-a7IINR L-bracket, and found it would just barely reach under the TAP and engage enough of my ballhead clamp to support the camera. But I had to look carefully when attaching the camera horizontally, to be sure the clamp and the Sunway's slots are engaging. If the clamp were to screw in underneath the slot, catastrophe!

Genji's way is more secure, but I have the Sunway in my car in case I misplace some part of the LB-A7M2 and its plate, plus its hex wrench and coin / screwdriver for assembly. It's enough trouble always remembering to bring the tripod. :-)

FYI, for anyone curious about whether their Canon FL 55 1.2 will work with the Leicaist FD to M adapter, mine works just fine. It's the only FL lens I have so I can't say beyond that. Others have apparently had problems with other FL lenses on the Leicaist FD adapter and I believe Techart says that their FD adapter isn't intended to be used with FL lenses. Nonetheless, and fortunately, my FL 55 works just fine with the Leicaist adapter.
