p.1 #1 · p.1 #1 · Art vs Art Image Comparison: Sigma 35mm f/1.4 vs 24-35mm f/2 Art

I usually shoot weddings with two camera bodies on my Holdfast Moneymaker. On the first body I usually have my 35 1.4, and the second body usually houses the 85 1.8G or 70-200. Sometimes 35 is not wide enough, so I find myself switching to the 24mm on the first body. The same applies in reverse sometimes. During receptions, I find myself alternating between the 35 and 24 more often than I want to.

I'm a huge fan of the Sigma Art lenses, so I was highly intrigued by the 24-35mm. The more I thought about it, the more it seemed to be the magic bullet I needed that would free me from constant lens changes. Plus, with the f/2 aperture, I surely wasn't going to miss out on that much background separation/bokeh...right?

Still I agonized over it for months. I'm somewhat of a bokeh fiend. There's nothing like a fast wide angle lens to give a 3D image that feels a lot like how I see the world. So trading the f/1.4 aperture for f/2 seemed like a step backward, and it made me drag my feet over the decision. I finally sucked it up and ordered one last week, but that copy ended up having issues (namely USPS dropping it and the UV filter smashing the front element), so I rented one instead.

I've done a series of shots comparing the size and IQ (bokeh) of both, mainly because I couldn't find a single instance of a comparison like that on the web. The one thing I'll point out is that the 24-35mm is massive. I think I'll call it Cthulu.

I hope this helps someone who's been agonizing over the choice, like I was.

Thank you for this. The zoom renders very nicely I feel. How do you find wide open sharpness, and CA?

You're welcome. I found the zoom to be equal to the prime in about all metrics wide open on both. Really spectacular lenses.

Some background foliage or patterns would be useful IMHO. Even a generic garden shot, focus on a flower or plant, with garden in front of and back of focus. Outdoors or window light portrait of some sort would be nice. No pressure, just curiosity! Also curious what f/2 looks like on the 35/1.4.

Liking the look of the zoom, forgot about that lens!
