p.1 #1 · p.1 #1 · Do you pack overlapping/duplicate lenses for a trip?

I'm off to Iceland on Sunday and still debating what to pack.

I will be taking a7r with Canon 16-35/4L as that is the widest I have, should I also pack my Loxia 21, Contax 28 and Sony 35? seems excessive just for the sake of having native/other options.

I'll also have Sony 55 and Zeiss 85

Sometimes too much kit is a distraction

I'd definitely take the Loxia, excellent wide open and faster for stars if the weather co-operates and you're interested. I think the Contax needs to be stopped down a little so no improvement over the zoom. I've not used the 35mm.

For a dedicated photography trip, I'd take: 16-35/4L IS, 24-105/4L IS II (in October), 100-400L IS II, TS-E 24/3.5L II, 1.4x III, M645 55/2.8, 80/2.8, A 150/2.8, and CZ 35/2 ZE, CZ 50/2 ZE, CV 75/2.5, and CZ 100/2 ZE. This would weight about 15.4 kg spread across my two carry-on bags (one carry-on and one 'personal'), including the weight of two xD cameras and the bags themselves.

For a personal vacation with family, I would take Fujifilm X-E2 with 14/2.8 and 18-55 OIS, and Canon SL1 with 70-200/4L IS and 1.4x III. When travelling with little or no expectation of having dedicated time for photography, I take a Fujifilm X100S and Sony RX100.

I don't and try to avoid overlaps.

A spare camera body is more important to me.
Now its Pentax K1, A7K (spare)
Used to be A7, Sigma SD1M (spare)

At least I would pack enough equipment to have it on my vacation and then maybe select on a day to day basis whatever seems appropriate. Some reduncancy can also be nice just in case you drop a lens (into a hot spring or glacier).
Enjoy Iceland

As always, only you can know if you really need it. I'd personally rather take the Loxia 21mm than a Canon 16-35/4L, but I also don't think I'd use 16-21mm all that often and would be happy stitching a few 21mm frames together if I needed. I do a lot of aurora, but that's usually 24-50mm not ultrawide.

I'd probably also choose between the Sony 35mm and Contax 28mm and only take one of those two. I like the idea of 21mm, 35mm, 55mm, and 85mm. But again, that's just me. When I'm out and about, I like to have one lens on my camera and two in my pockets and prefer not carrying a bag when hiking.

For a car oriented trip I might bring more, but I do like to make some of the decisions now to simplify and declutter the choices I have to make when actually photographing.

I always take a zoom. When I'm just walking around and taking snaps, not when I'm on abmission to take photos. I also take my primes, mostly Zeiss for when I want to focus on landscapes. These are typically heavy lens. I also take some compact lenses like the 28 f2 for when I'm street shooting. Obviously I don't lug all my gear everywhere with me...just take what I need depending on my planned outing...the rest stays in my room.

So yes, I have overlap in my lenses, but they serve different functions.

I take overlapping lenses for travel where I do the vast majority of my shooting, but on a day to day basis only carry 2-3 lenses and 1-2 camera bodies, depending on mood or what I expect to be shooting.

I haven't owned many overlapping lenses in years, with the exception of whatever kit zoom I currently have (if any).

I usually take ZF 21, Otus 55, Contax N85 and either 14-24G or 16-35 mk1. And maybe some tele like 70-200L or 500L depending on trip. Also bring RX1 which covers nicely the 35mm focal length. Depending on type of trip, I will substitute 100/2 planar or R100/2.8 APO for N85 and for tele use only R180/2.8 APO for tele if just for landscape and not much wildlife type of trip.
Enjoy your trip John! Such a beautiful place! Hope to get there soon some day.

I have over packed for years. recently I had to be relatively careful due to flight restrictions and couldn't go crazy. I really wanted to take my MF system and couldn't really put anything else in carry on.

I ended up with a Pentax 645Z, 28-45, 45-85, 120 macro, 150 and 200mm. Lee filters and a tripod went in my checked luggage. That's 7kg plus tripod and accessories. I took an RX100II as my backup rather than the A7R2 or SL that I had sitting on the bed. I just knew they wouldn't get to carry on.

After all the anxiety of "missing" shots I found that I really didn't miss anything. Everything got used and I could carry it all with me at all times. I could have left the 150 at home but there was a portrait session on this trip and the lens is only 560 grams. I didn't use my *backup* at all.

What I learned for myself is that, for me, it's best if I plan and pack for the plan. From now on I'm going to decide beforehand what I'm going to shoot and just pack for that. I'm going to switch out my backup for my M plus three small primes but that's it.

Next year I'm thinking about a trip to Cuba. So my packing list will be XPro2's, 10-24, 23mm, 35mm, 56mm 50-140 because I know that's what I'll use. If I were planning a trip to Iceland I'd take my Pentax kit. Just what I need plus something to cover an emergency (my RX100II).

A tiny 35-70 does not hurt, especially if light will be plenty. Zuiko 35-70 3.5-4.5 appears to be the most compact option. Is quite sharp and goes for peanuts. Minolta is a well respected candidate; and heavier Contax is one of the most applauded lenses in whole FM Alt forum.

Going from particular to general, yes duplication may be meanigful if it brings smtg on the table and zooms live for these days (convenience assured, compactness highly likely).
