If you are permitted to take only one camera body and one lens for a wildlife outing which combo would you take?

Please free to post pictures of your preferred combo.

With my limited gear option I would take 7D + EF 100-400mm f/4.5-5.6L IS II.

1Dx II with 100-400 + 1.4x extender (what I'm taking to Tanzania this week) but if no flight weight restrictions, then I would add in the 300mm 2.8 + x2 extender

+1 to 1DXii + 1.4TC + 100-400ii
Scheming it for Mongolia next year, but luckily can take 2 more lenses (16-35/4,24-70/4).

Also agreed your big cat image is priceless.

Lovely image, Jude, especially the first one.
7dMkII and 100-400MkII is my preferred combo (even if I also have the 1Dx MkII).
If I want more reach, then I will put on a 400 DO MkII with the 1.4 X TC.

The best camera is the one you have with you.

I'd love to have a D500 and one of the big primes, but my D7200 and 80-400 work well enough until my money tree starts producing.

I just returned from Africa and, although I shoot Nikon, I used a 80-400mm on my D810 (full frame) and it worked great. At times it would have been nice to have a longer lens but it is surprising how close you get to the animals so a longer lens was not often needed.
I don't know where you are going but were I was dust was a REAL problem so I never changed lenses. For close work I had another body with a 24-70mm.
Have a good trip!

First off, both of those images are excellent. Mammals vs birds always makes the decision on gear harder.

Tough call and it really depends on if one needs versatility or maximum reach and if one needs to handhold all day or can use a tripod/monopod.

I think my most versatile combo is 1DXII, 100-400II and 1.4TCIII as needed.
My favourite combo overall is 1DXII and 400DOII (with both TCs along).
600II and TCs if max reach is needed and support can be used.

Thanks everyone for sharing your views. Looks like the most preferable choice is 1DXII and 100-400II. I was expecting some 5DS R to appear as well.

1 DX II and two lenses. 100-400 II and 800. Because wherever I've traveled I've been glad I had the reach of the 800.

My choice would be the Sony A77II with the 70/400 and 500f4.

5DSR and 100-400 II when light is good, weight is an issue, and maximum versatility in focal-length quickly.

Otherwise 5DSR & 300 f2.8 in poor light. 80D probably good option also, but don't own one.
