Another 50. Add them all up and you go a nice 500mm lens.

Well well: another 50!

The MTFs look good, and the price is right...

Where did you see the MTFs? Did I just miss them when I looked at the above URL?

This lens is unique though being a small and compact macro lenses capable of 1:1. Seems like a good companion to the 55/1.8 ZA.

Phew I was getting worried, it had been almost a month since the last 50mm lens was released.

Could tomorrow's announcement be even more exciting? (not holding my breath)

Recently, Sony manager Otaka said:
“From now on, if we release a new body, we’ll release a new lens. If we release a new lens, we’ll release a new body.”

There is a press conference tomorrow (Sep 1)

I wonder if the MF is mechanical or by wire? For me macro and AF is not a good combo.

I guess it will be focus by wire, but it may not be a bad thing. I have both the 55/1.8 ZA and the 50/1.8 FE, and they are a bit different w.r.t. the focus feel. The 50/1.8 FE is less sensitive to the speed you turn the focus ring with, so it will behave more like a classic MF lens than the 55/1.8 ZA. The 50/1.8 FE gives a good focus throw and I guess that the new 50/2.8 will too, but I don't know this, just guessing.

Fred, Matt, I'm obviously loosing count of all the fifties.

Justruss, lets hope they are done doing 50mm lenses for a while. 35/2 would be nice and definitely belongs in the lineup. I would like a 85/2.8 AF in native E mount that's small and lightweight, which would fit nicely in a small kit with the 28/2 + 50/2.8 Macro.

I'm just glad I don't have obsession with 50mm lenses. I would be dead broke. Lol

Bad enough I had about 4 or 5 of them. I had a Dark Knight. Nice lens too

Sooner or later there's almost certainly a Batis ~50 inbound, so we're not done counting, yet.

It exists...but it's attached permanently to a body- the RX1R II.

Looks like it might be nice.

I have more than enough 50ish lenses still and the Sony Zeiss 55 1.8 works ok with AF extension tubes for when I want real macro plus I have a Sigma 150 2.8 APO macro, several macro converters, reversing rings and bellows most of which doesn't get used now since I don't do much macro anyway these days.

I also found the Sony APSC 50 1.8 OSS lens worked great for macro with AF extension tubes and covered full frame with about 16mm and more extension. I am regretting selling that lens. Does that make it eleven?

From the press release at Dpreview

"The new FE 50mm F2.8 Macro lens features an ED (Extra-low Dispersion) glass to effectively compensate for axial chromatic aberration at close focus, allowing it to create consistently sharp and high quality images."

I find it very interesting that correction of axial colour or longitudinal CA receives special mention. I hope this holds true.

"Additionally, its comprehensive range of controls including focus-mode switch, focus-range limiter and focus-hold button ensure an effortless shooting experience for a wide range of users."

This sounds useful to me. I wonder, if this is the first 50mm class macro to receive a focus hold button. On Sony FE lenses the focus hold button is programmable.

Yep focus hold is more than usually useful on a macro; you can chose the distance/perspective you want to shoot from, AF, focus hold and then move the camera slightly to pinpoint focus.

A bit surprised they released another externally focusing lens. Not my cup of tea, but a good option never the less

Also it's dust and moisture resistant, first non-G or zeiss to have this?

Externally focussing is not a bad idea on a macro. If it's internally focussing it has to be long enough to handle the closest focus without extending. That's why the 90 macro (and Canons 100L) is so huge compared to some legacy 90 macros.
