Fotodiox claims that having the vari ND behind the lens instead of in front eliminates the dreaded X. All I can say is I never saw the X in my use of the old one.
There does seem to be a change with the new one; the old one was claimed to be a 1-10 stop ND, while the new one is a 1-8 stop ND.
There is a slight magenta cast with the old one, but I found it not too difficult to clean up. I just haven't used it much since it's such a pain to pre-set the aperture on a Canon lens. That's why I'm so interested in the new one. Here are a few samples of images I captured with the old version:
