Yes I thought about the 3D printing idea. I might be able to find someone on campus to scan in the Canon and mess with scaling - in which case the printing itself might not be prohibitive.

But before then it might be worth looking at thicker tripod rings for other cameras; a rubber shim will work if it's too large.

Or just use the APO-sonnar manually!

I actually think that the right solution for 135 is two lenses: a future GM or Zeiss native AF lens for portraits, and a future Loxia which is

It's a pity Zeiss didn't include a tripod foot on the lens, like Nikon did with the Nikkor-P.C 105/2.5 in LTM mount. My copy arrived today.

New poster here, but I've been following this thread since purchasing the TAP. Thank you, genji, for creating the excellent FAQ!

I'm anxious to see reports on how well this adapter works on Sony's new A6500.

Best,

While a totally different lens, I felt the same awkwardness with trying to manually focus the Minolta M-Rokkor 40/2 CLE. The focus tab was just located in a position that I liked. However, the lens works great with TAP and it's tiny but produces a great image.

question about TAP battery drain - to prevent it, is it necessary to always remove and reinsert the battery after turning off the camera while not in frequent use?

That is typically what I do, if I'm putting it away I'll do a quick removal and re-insert to prevent the drainage.

Yes, that's very annoying and I'm hoping they will be able to fix it.

I promised I would report back on whether the Tripod Ring for the Canon 70-300L will fit on the Zeiss Apo Sonnar 2/135 so that TAP can be used on a tripod (allowing TAP to move the camera rather than the lens, which is too heavy.

I was going to buy a cheap Chinese copy, and then I found one in my gear cupboard dating from my Canon days!

But sadly the answer is no; it's just bit too small, even if you strip out the lining (which is not a good idea anyway in terms of the potential to scratch).

Thanks for the update, you saved me the trouble of ordering one off of eBay. Honestly not sure it matters much to me anymore, I finally received my Leicaist EF-LM adapter and although it works it's a huge pain to use with ZE mount given that there is no way to adjust the aperture on the ZE mount lenses, I'm also not particularly happy with the quality of the Leicaist adapter, it's difficult to un-mount the lens off of the adapter which concerns me. I've set my APO to F2 by mounting it on the metabones. In my opinion it's too heavy for the TAP, you're basically holding the lens and the TAP is moving the camera body.

Genji, Many thanks.

I went to the FAQ, followed the instructions for the Android app and all now seems to have worked fine witht he new FLs. (Too bad my iPhone cannot use this app, but the overall product is still somewhat magical.)

On another point, I too am now trying to address the tripod collar question that others have faced. I have a cheap "for Canon" F4 70-200 collar on order from eBay. It looks like it will be a bit too wide in its inner diameter, but only 4-5mm wider than the CY/LM adapter I use, which is about 60.3mm wide.

In the meantime I have modified an old Novoflex ASTAT-MFT tripod collar I have (removing the inner plastic collar and lining the bare metal ring with a few thicknesses of duct tape). I attached this to the CY/LM adapter. Kinda ugly but seems to reasonably well if used with caution. Two hang ups: 1. The locking button on the CY/LM adapter is pressed down by the collar. 2. the CY/LM adapter I have (from FotoioX -- if I am reading that correctly) is tough to attach to the longer CY lenses I have. CY 85 1.4 is fine; CY 180 2.8 is kinda scary; CY 100-300 is also hard to attach.

My Novoflex ASTAT-NEX tripod mount ring came with an additional thinner plastic collar for Leica R adapters. When I switch from the standard collar to the thinner collar the Leicaist CY -> LM and OM -> LM adapters fit perfectly and, because the gap between the ends of the collar is just big enough, the locking buttons are not pressed down. I have eight Leicaist XX - > LM adapters and only these two behave in that way. The C/Y 35/1.4 and 85/1.4 lenses are the largest I have and I'm not sure I'd be comfortable using any lenses bigger than that with the ASTAT mount ring, TAP, and Leicaist CY -> LM combo.

Yes the reason for the tripod ring is so that the TAP can move the camera not the lens, which as you say is too heavy. I got the ZF version not ZE exactly because it has an aperture ring...

I much prefer the ZF versions just because of the aperture ring. It's harder to adapt but it's worth it.

Harder to adapt and harder to MF, given that the focusing ring turns in the wrong direction.

What I find worse even than the focusing ring going the 'wrong' way, is the damn lens twisting on in the off direction and vice versa!

But I still think it's worth it to have an aperture ring; especially for TAP use where you can't use electronic aperture on a canon mount.

Ah, since I've only used Canon EF lenses with the Metabones IV, I hadn't thought of the aperture issue. The negatives of focusing and lens mounting direction are minor compared to the positive of being able to set the aperture when you use the lens with the TAP.

I had a ZE 100 MP, and a Fotodiox smart adapter. The combo worked great, manually.
Sometime after purchasing the TAP, most of my lens collection transformed to the mechanical aperture variety. Now, I find that I prefer it to an electronic aperture.
I eventually sold the ZE and picked up a ZF 100 MP, and won't buy an adapted lens if it doesn't have a mechanical aperture.

Even if the TAP goes TU, and the company disappears, we can still shoot MF lenses and have a great experience.
Often, when shooting with an AF lens, something almost feels wrong, because I'm letting the camera do too much .

I had exactly the same difficulty with focusing and promptly sold my copy. But, based on Bradford's experience, the TAP solves that problem. Looking forward to seeing some TAP + Heliar 40/2.8 pictures.

I just got the Heliar 40/2.8 today. This thing is very well built and tiny. It also works great with TAP!
If focuses well in dim light and the rendering is very nice with bold colors and nice fall-off.

It's also surprisingly sharp wide-open.
Thanks to its straight 10-blade aperture, sunstars are well-defined starting at f/4, similarly to my other VC lenses.

Frankly it's a lens I didn't really need but it looks cool on the A7RII + TAP and it's capable of high IQ while being light and tiny. Tomorrow I will test it at infinity and check the corners but I'm not expecting miracles there.

Bokeh disks are free of onion ring patterns but I see some LoCA wide open. It's gone by f/4.
I will post some images later on.

Here are some images from around my house tonight. (wide open at f/2.8)
Except for the sunstar sample was shot at f/4.

And here is how ridiculously small this lens look with TAP. It's all metal.
(Total weight with TAP + hood is 265g)

Wow, Fred! And I thought the M-Rokkor 40/2 was small. Images look nice and sharp. Can't wait to see some outdoor scenes. Very cool!
