Hm, by any chance did you take a shot at a "random" aperture setting prior to that? It happened to me before and I noticed that after I tried to change the focal length setting and selected an f/ number that was not listed in the manual for changing the FL. I was a panic for a while but I could get it to work again after I triggered the shutter using f/25 for setting it back to a 50mm setting. Phew!

Same thing happened to me too. Also, are you seeing focus peaking color at all? If so, either the adapter is parked in MF or you switched the camera to MF. Otherwise, as Joshua says make sure your camera is set for f/2 once you know you haven't locked the adapter in MF mode.

That must be what I did. Thanks. All good now. (setting it to f/22 and then back to f/2 for shooting worked and makes EXIF set at 35 - whew!)

For me some of the biggest gains are with my longer lenses - I spent an hour on the dunes last week taking photos of dune-nesting birds with my Canon FD 4/300 L, and provided I pre-focused into the approximate zone, it proved relatively rapid and accurate. Overall its giving a much higher proportion of well-focused shots than just focusing manually, and being able to rely on the adapter for focusing, frees ones attention to more important issues like composition. Exif was set using the android adapter.

Edited to bring up eye following suggestion below...

One of our rarer shorebirds...

Is/was your lens tripod or monopod mounted and does the adapter move the camera rather than such a heavy lens? If so, I could see where this could be useful in the future when and if I get an A7rII and the adapter could be used to move the camera (rather than the lens) when using my Leica R 280mm f4 Apo Telyt (either naked or with my Leica R 1.4X Apo Extender) or my Canon new FD 500 mm f4.5L lens.

Thanks.

Rich

Hi Rich,

I used it entirely handheld, supporting the lens with my left hand and holding the camera with my right - when focused into the approximate zone, the adapter moves only a millimetre or two, so I don't feel as if its placing a huge demand on the motor. In addition, I tended to take multiple shots in the same location and at the same approximate distance -it might be different if you were shifting repeatedly back and forward from zero to max extension. I see that your 500 mm is about twice the weight of the 300 mm, so that might be a factor to consider.

Yup. once pre-focused the TAP focuses in a relatively narrow range. That can be a great advantage.

I am not sure where I read how I did it the first time, but I cannot seem to get the Android app to connect to my adapter now that I've added some lenses to the app. I now want to change the f/22 from 35/2 to 35/1.2 and I did it in the app but I cannot get the app/phone to find the adapter like I did 2 weeks ago. The documentation doesn't seem to address this and I don't see it on their website in the FAQs, etc. I suspect I found it somewhere in the bazillion pages of this discussion.

Hi K-H,

Great images. Thank you for posting those. So I presume the adapter must move the camera body in this case since the lens weighs 1875 grams. So, if I had an A7rII I guess that I could get AF with my 280mm f4 Apo Telyt either with or without my 1.4X Apo Extender. Was this on a tripod or would I be able to use this set-up with my lens mounted to my tripod?

Thanks.

Rich

It took me a while yesterday to get the Android app to connect to the Techart PRO but I finally figured it out. I've just tried again and had no difficulty connecting. Here's what I did:

1) Ensure that both the phone and camera batteries are fully charged.
2) Set the aperture on the camera body to F90 and take a picture.
3) Turn the camera off.
4) On the phone, go to Settings and in Display preferences, set it to sleep after 10 (or 30) minutes of activity (so the display doesn't turn off during the update).
5) Still in Settings, open the Bluetooth preferences. The LM-EA7 (i.e. the Techart PRO) should be listed as an available device.
6) Launch the LM-EA7-CONFIG app.
7) The configuration app opens with the scrollable list of apertures, enabling you to change the focal length, parking behavior, and focus mode for up to ten lenses.
8) When the configuration info has been updated, turn the camera back on and set the aperture on the camera body back to F2.
9) Test that it has worked by setting the aperture on the camera body to invoke a different focal length then take a picture.
10) Set the aperture on the camera body back to F2, take another picture, and check the EXIF data.
11) Reset the phone's Display settings if necessary.

Thanks. So the app now connects to my camera as you note. It appears to move quickly and then I get, "Congratulations > Config LM-EA7 success" and I hit OK and the app closes. There is no alert asking if I want to install an update. I have changed F13 to be 35/1.2 yet when I then shift to f/13 and take a picture and then go back to f/2, the EXIF still shows the older f/2 instead of f/1.2. Hmmm.

Thanks Rich. Great question.
My Leica 280/4 and 105-280/4.2 are so heavy that I have to shoot them on tripod or some kind of support.
I got my TAP back in April and was shooting a bunch of 4K videos with it on A7r2 in May.

The following image of a Cassin's Kingbird, a fly catcher, was lifted from a 4K video and shot with

A7r2 + TECHART LM-EA7 + NOVOFLEX LEM/LER + APO-Extender-R 2x + Vario-Elmar-R 105-280/4.2

on tripod with a wired remote that can also control video and digital magnification in the A7r2.

This is a full resolution jpg shot of a Black-Headed Grosbeak shot at the 105mm end of the lens but with the 2x Extender and TAP.

The EXIF will show f/2 no matter what maximum aperture you have set via the config app. Fred asked the Techart people about this and they explained that, although they originally intended for the aperture value to be recorded into the EXIF via the app, they couldn't get it to work properly and so that functionality is currently blocked.

Thanks for the detailed instruction. I still have an android-based phone I am not currently using. I will try to change them FL later on.

I normally use an iPhone but I bought a cheap Android phone so I could have another number to use for two-step verification for online services. I'm glad I did because there's no iOS version of the TAP config app.

[Edited] Also I realize that, because of my lack of Android experience, I was launching the 0831-LM-EA7-Config.apk file each time, which is why I was getting the message about updating the app. I then found the installed app and so I've updated my previous post to correct this.

Which FD to LM adapter are you using? I purchased a no name adapter from Rainbow Imaging. It would not fit the TAP. On the other hand, the same no name MD to LM adapter works fine.

I've had similar problems with anything other than the Leicaist available from Techart or listed on EBay.

Okay, it was driving me crazy. Good to know. At least the 35 shows up, so that's a start.
