Mine shipped on the 8th...

Q: what shipper do they use in USA? And how long did it take to arrive post notice of shipping?

As you can see, I'm particularly excited to use with my C/Y 35-70 and Sonnar C. Hopefully it can also focus my C/Y 100/2. Guess I should now read thru the whole thread and figure out how to setup and use...

I got a promotional email a couple days ago from Kolari for the TAP and you can use code Kolari at checkout for $20 off the adapter from Techart's website...

I've been using my 35-70 a ton with the TAP, it's such a fun lens with AF.

Pretty simple to use.. put it on the camera, set camera aperture to f2, set IBIS as you wish, shoot away.. You can also set exif focal length by going to a certain aperture in camera, shooting a frame, then returning to f2. There's table in the instructions that come with the TAP that is handy to keep around.

As far as firmware, download the app, and open it up, turn on the camera, set it in camera to F90, take a frame (you may need to set appropriate shutter speed if using manual mode), power camera off. Then choose the correct adapter from the list in the app and wait for the update (it's the only one in the list at v4 so far)

That's pretty much all there is to it.. if you have android device I think you load an .apk that allow assigning certain lenses to certain aperture values for exif info, but really the whole thing is very simple and really nice to use.

My email announcing shipment was sent on September 1. The adapter was delivered by the USPS on September 8. Magic!

I think I said this on page 4. It is getting confusing and repetitive. We need a volunteer. Lol

The TechArt folks must love us and actually they should look at this thread and pick it apart the questions and answers and list them on their website.

Mine is scheduled to arrive this Wednesday from Amazon. I'll plan on reading through the thread first before I ask any questions. I sure hope it works well with the Voigtlander 35/1.2 II.

I would be stunned if it didn't!
Good luck!

BTW, I ordered recently another adapter from the TAP website.
One day later it was already shipped.
So no backlog any longer it seems.

There's no reason it shouldn't work. It's a pretty simple concept the way this thing works.

Be sure to post some photos! I was thinking of picking that lens up again after I sold it when I moved from Leica to Sony. I was just going through my old C1 catalogs looking for images I'd taken with it, and was pretty happy with the performance a few stops down from wide open.

I keep wondering if the Nokton is the way to go, or if I should just grab the CY 35mm 1.4. I've got to do some research and see how similar the Contax 35 is to the Zony Distagon 35 1.4. I don't want to duplicate the focal length if I'm going to get pretty similar results.

It's arrived!!!

Now, with which of my (way too many) lenses should I christen the Techart PRO?

Easy question! The C-Sonnar...

I wish the adapter supported the Lock-on modes as well. I use it a lot with native lenses and the RX1RII.

Yep, you're correct.. I always called it flexible spot, since it's rather flexible.. But I was referring to lock-on flex spot where you can move the camera and it follows a specific focus point automatically.. that is the one that doesn't work.

Sorry for the confusion.

The Techart PRO was waiting for me at the post office today, along with a (~1957) Konishiroku Hexanon 50mm f/1.9 lens (I'm a sucker for legacy 50mm LTM lenses). The Hexanon 50 had to take a back seat to the Techart PRO but I'm sure that, once they meet, they'll get along fine together.

I mounted the C-Sonnar ZM 50/1.5 on the TAP and it just worked, finding focus with no difficulty on various objects in my living room. I took a few snaps and discovered that the default focal length of 15mm had been recorded in the EXIF data. (Note to Techart: a default focal length of 50mm might be preferable to 15mm, given the popularity of 50mm lenses relative to that of 15mm lenses). Even so, changing the focal length stored in the adapter to 50mm was quick and easy.

I'd deliberately made some exposures with the preinstalled version 3 firmware so I could see how the AF had improved with version 4. I used the iPhone app to update the firmware and was really impressed that what seems complicated when one reads about it is actually straightforward in practice. I forgot to turn the phone Auto-Lock to Off and had a momentary panic when the display turned off but pressing the Home button reactivated the display and I saw that the update was proceeding without problems.

I turned on the camera and checked the "lens" firmware version: 4.0. So far, so good. And the AF was noticeably faster. Then I went out to take pictures in the late afternoon, my favorite time to shoot. All appeared to be going well, with the TAP seemingly able to find focus (as Fred has mentioned) in quite low light. When I got home though, and loaded the pictures into Photo Mechanic, I saw that the focal length recorded in the EXIF was 15mm! The firmware update had clearly reset the adapter to the default value and messed up the EXIF data (see below). What one might call a trap for young players. So I'm not sure how much this has impacted negatively on pictures that were shot at 1/30 of a second.

Just to be clear, the IBIS focal length you set, and the focal length recorded in the EXIF have no relationship. You would think it would, but it's not the case (though here's hoping techart can figure that out..)

I still may not have understood this properly but I would have thought that, if SteadyShot Adjust. is set to "Auto" in the camera, that the TAP sends its stored focal length to the camera and the camera then uses this value to set the IBIS focal length.

Actually I was double checking that and you may be correct.. I've been using a lot of zooms lately so I've been manually setting it. Maybe one of the guys who've been using it for a while will clarify if setting the FL via on-camera aperture also lets auto-IBIS pick up the correct FL.

BrandonSi, and anyone else... How well does continuous AF work (specifically with the Contax 35-70)? Do you think it could keep up with dancers in motion?

I shot a dance class last week using a rented Sony 24-70 G master, and it was fantastic. But it is expensive... I'm wondering about the image quality/AF functionality difference when comparing the 24-70 to the TAP/Contax combination 35-70.

Dancers? Indoors, moving? I think you want lock on AF for that, which TAP doesn't support.

I have been playing with the Contax on TAP. It works well, and continuous works, but I wouldn't try to use it for tracking, especially in low light..

Definitely not going to be 24-70 G level, that's for sure. I'm sure you could do it, it would just depend on how much DoF and light you're working with.. it could be anywhere from maybe-ok to really frustrating.

Someone else put it really well, that TAP (with v4) gets you to about the poorest performing native FE lens as far as AF speed.. (which is still incredible, IMO). Not to mention you don't get lock-on AF or Eye AF, so it's not a 1:1 replacement for native lenses for all uses.

On a side note.. what do you all think the slowest FE lens is w.r.t AF? Probably one of the first ones out.. maybe 16-35 OSS?

When using Auto, it does.
When using Manual, IBIS will use its selected focal length.
BTW, you need 3 buttons to control IBIS without using the camera menu.
I described that further up this thread.
