Leica Vario-Elmar-R 35-70/3.5
Leica Vario-Elmar-R 35-70/4

My understanding is the R 35-70/3.5 is the Leica branded version of the CY 35-70/3.5. Is this true?
I also read somewhere that the R 35-70/4 is optically better. Is this true?

I only have experience with the R 35-70/4 and like its IQ a lot.

Hi K-H,

As I recall, the Leica R 35-70mm f 3.5 Vario was built for Leica by Minolta. The Leica R 35-70mm f4 Vario Elmar like the Leica R 80-200mm f4 Vario Elmar lenses were both built for Leica by Kyocera (the maker of Contax and Yashica cameras and lenses). The Leica R 35-70mm f4 Vario Elmar is supposed to be a noticeably better performer than the Leica R 35-70mm f3.5 Vario. I am not sure if the Leica R 35-70mm f3.5 Vario includes a macro setting but the Leica R 35-70mm f4 Vario Elmar lens does.

I'm not sure myself, I've got the one (F4 ROM version). I did read some discussion about one of them being Minolta's design (and perhaps produced by minotla?), and I believe that was the f/3.5 version.

Many thanks Rich for refreshing my memory. I think you are correct. Thanks again.
I also have the Leica R 80-200mm f4 Vario Elmar lens, another fun lens to use.

Not to get too far off topic, but since we're discussing these zooms, following are links to the original specs.

It seems that beyond the fact that Kyocera manufactured both, they really are quite different.

Another zoom that works really well with the Techart Pro . . . the Minolta MD35-70/3.5 macro. For a lens that is just north of $100, smaller and lighter than the Zeiss Contax, it packs a lot of value. The contax has better color but there's plenty of sharpness in this lens.

I am learning so much here and am also interested in the 35-70 discussions, since I intend to go that route.

I wonder if the CY is better at landscape and architecture with its focus across the frame and hight contrast, and the Leica F4 for portraits with those Leica tonalities.

Some folks say it works in continuous AF (mine just arrived)
But C-AF is greyed out in the camera. Is there a way of setting it on the adapter?

Also any luck with the CV 75/2.5? I'm getting very slow AF followed by AF lock which is dramatically out of focus! This seems to be much worse than what most folks are reporting (A7rII). This is in light levels 1/60 @ f2 ISO 100 - is that just too low a light level to expect decent results?

Edit Nope: 100% fail rate in bright sunlight, different angles of contrast, AF-S (can;t set AF-C) at f 2.5 and 2.8
Firmware 3.0. (camera 3.3) I begin to think maybe I have a dud? I've tried focussing at long distances with the lens set to infinity, and close with pre-focus.

David,
It definitely works in AF-C mode. Is your camera set to PDAF?

Lifesaving advice.

At first I thought "Of course it @!$$ is; teaching a grandmother to suck eggs etc"

But I thought I ought check...

So I did.

And it wasn't!

I wonder how long it hasn't been for, and how it happened?

thanks!

Starting to like this adapter. Have not had a chance to play with it, really, but brought it to see some friends today with two lenses--ZM 35/1.4 and Leica M 75/2 apo. It had a misstep or two on the 75, but worked, if not quite as reliably as on the 35. I guess on longer focal lengths, one needs to be at least in the vicinity of proper focus. Here are one from each, both wide open:

Great shots!
I enjoy manual focusing my lenses but TAP gave new life to my ZM 35/1.4, 50/1.5C and Leica 90/2.5 lenses.

From your description, it seemed that your camera was set to contrast detect AF.
I'm glad we figured it out!
Post your thoughts on the adapter whenever you can.

David, just because I'm curious, does the CV 75 work better now with PDAF enabled?

Also, I get that one cannot set f11 via the adapter, but is it still possible to stop down to f11 in manual mode? Thanks. Still contemplating 35 ZM vs 24-70 GM, without being able to come to a conclusion.

Yep it works just fine. I was being an idiot!

Yes there's no problem using f11 on the lens; the adapter doesn't know what you have the lens set to.

Thanks. I'm thinking of getting a mint CV 75 2.5, as it's a low-priced alternative to the Leica 75's for landscapes with nice sunstars. The adapter would remedy the lens' only weakness, the long MFD.

Yes that's right Fred, it was set to CDAF. I wonder how long for? It's not like the AF on AF lenses has been annoying me!

Anyhow all sorted out. Thanks! The only lens I've been using it on so far is the CV 2.5/75 and it seems to work fine, especially if you pre-focus a bit. I have adapters for c/y and OM coming, so I'll have more to say then (and a C-Sonnar in the mail!)

This could be an expensive acquisition, in that it makes various older lenses I wasn't tempted by before (like the C-sonnar which I've always liked the look of as an informal portrait lens but for those purposes prefer AF) suddenly more tempting!

The real test will be tying that out in a fast moving situation to make sure it really is better than manual focus...

Edit: been tripping it out in darker conditions around EV 0 and 1 and it's fine, which is all I need. Colour me impressed.

My experience as well.. the lower the light the more difficult the focusing is for the TAP to handle.. even (and forgive me, I don't speak EV) at something like 1/50, f 2.8, ISO 1600, it starts to become a bit confused depending on the lens being used (at least on my 35-70/a7r ii combo, it's not a fan). Same setting on my 50 1.4 and it's fine. Maybe related to lens max aperture somehow?

I've only tested one zoom, but so far it seems as if primes work a lot better. Zooms aren't terrible, but just not as snappy and care-free as primes.

And yes.. the TAP definitely makes me want to buy a lot of those MF lenses that I put on my "ehh.. maybe someday.. " list.

Anyway, a simple one from a day or two ago with the 85 CY Sonnar.

It's nic and sharp for landscape, but it's performance with backlight is not amazing, and may cut against the benefit if the sunstars...and it flares badly with grazing light.

Anyone figured out a good way to chance IBIS focal length with the TAP attached? I seem to always go into auto.. or is this when it's a good idea to setup the focal length with the in-camera aperture value / fire a frame method?

And sorry, I know this isn't 'share your TAP photos' thread, but I'm just having too much fun with this thing.

Walking around the house today with the CY mount Yashica ML 50 1.4. I can't remember if it was a straight clone of the Planar or not, but it's a nice lens. A bit more flare and less contrast in some situations, but I imagine that's due to lack of the Zeiss T* coating. Not bad for ~$75 USD.
