p.1 #1 · p.1 #1 · Announced: Samyang 20mm f/1.8 Full Frame E-mount

I bet there are a lot of people out there that will enjoy this one.

(the photo is obviously not of the e-mount version, since it is missing the extended barrel)

550 euro. 2 aspherical elements. 3 ED elements. Circular 7-blades aperture. 525g for the e-mount version.

How good will it be compared to the Loxia 21 though?

Will it dethrone the Samyang 24/1.4 in astrophotography?

And the annoying wrong hard infinity stop, will it still be there?

The coma performance is the most critical aspect for me. If it is brilliant in that regard at f/1.8, I could be a buyer of this lens.

P.S.: I hope the "CA" writing on the aperture ring is does not stand for the amount of CA :P

On specs it is an ideal Astro photography lens. I hope the coma is low. I also wish it was a true E mount lens and not adapted DSLR.

As is it looks similar in size to the 24/1.4 which is a good Astro lens but I find it too big for everyday use and just bring it out at night.

It is the same formula. E-mount = standard DSLR lens plus huge ugly metal chunk tube. But so are GM lenses as well (=Greater Mass).

Only Loxias and few native solutions (28/2, 35/2.8 and 55/1.8) are following the concept.

Another 20mm option to go along with the Sigma 20/1.4 and Loxia 21/2.8!
I hope Samyang prices this lens aggressively at around $500.

Will the E-mount version have a CPU chip? I've not seen one mentioned or show on the Sigma website. Ugh if it doesn't have a chip on the lens.

I doubt it-- they don't have CPU chips on their MF Canon (or any other mount) lenses as far as I know.

Very hard to beat Loxia as landscape lens but really looking forward to see wide open performance. And even if it fails, Pentax will probably get best performing native K-mount WA prime so far stopped down. Good wide open performance = win-win, good stopped down = only win.

The Sigma 20mm f/1.4 Art is the one to beat, IMHO. It is big and heavy but it performs really well and it is faster than the Samyang. The street price of the Sigma is $750 but you need an adapter for that unless you already have one. Thus, it will depend on the final pricing of this particular lens.

Samyang makes excellent lenses optically but it seems like it falls a tad short on the overall "finesse" package, like not incorporating a chip for including exif data. But that will increase the price, which is the most attractive appeal of their lens lineup . Oh, well.

Closest competitor is the CV 21/1.8 imo.

I'm still hoping that Samyang will some day release a FE equivalent to their APS-C 12mm f/2. Designed for mirrorless, small, ~21mm, f/2 or f/2.8, ~$500, and low coma. This is neat, but way too big for me, just not an option.

Man could we all have been more wrong trying to guess these Samyang "5 new lenses over the next 5 months"?

I'm assuming the last one next week will be the AF 14/2.8.

I'm still trying to figure out what size the filter ring is- none of the materials seem to mention that it has one, and that first shot up top is the first one I've seen where filter threads are clearly present!

The sigma has some coma though right? Not that coma matters for most applications of course.

I always hoped for the same-- but 18mm, so a perfect match, but FF. If they can keep it small, and have it deliver IQ...

It will be difficult for me to give up my Batis 18mm though. That's an adopt-a-system sort of lens.

A true FE mount full frame version of that would be amazing!!

I think it would be a true must have, just as the 12/2 is for crop sensor users.

At wide open, yes, but 2-stop down at f/2.8 it is practically gone. I used it at aperture setting between f/2 and f/2.8 for some star photography and I really loved the results. Everything is in past tense as I sol mine already in favor os Zeiss Batis 18mm for its wider angle but I missed the Sigma lens.

Good to know! Maybe I'll get it and should it around 2.2. Thanks
