This seems like a realistic assessment. Just like a regular speedbooster gives you near full frame quality on apsc for certain lens/camera combinations, having a good full frame camera is better. In the absence of an affordable medium format camera, these Kipon adapters may be an interesting route for some people. If you have a number of matching lenses, having both a regular and a 0.7x adapter gives you more options.

My first idea for such an adapter was for use with other lenses with large image circles, such as a Canon FD 400/2.8. This will probably result in an impractical amount of bodging, but it is the kind of experiment I like. Ideally I would like a EF to E mount speedbooster of high quality with a larger diameter, so it would be more useful for really fast lenses and full frame cameras.

I've owned both, at the same time. The IQ of the C 150/3.5 N is nowhere nearly as good as the A 150/2.8. Maybe that guy had a duff A 150/2.8.

P.S. it's possible that guy was refering to the Mamiya 645 AF 150/3.5; but if so, he must have been shooting on a Mamiya 645 AF body, as the M645 AF lenses don't have manual aperture rings.

It's not. It has anomalous dispersion elements which I think is why it and the 120 Macro have such neutral bokeh. Both are well corrected lenses, though.

Mamiya lenses are sort of bokeh engineered. They all look nice though.

I took this 0.7x Mamyia speedbooster, modified it and my Canon Fd 400mm f/2.8L and have now a 280mm/2.0 lens on Sony A7II :-)

Sounds great, exactly my plan. Is the IQ affected in any major way? Can you also use it on a FD 300/2.8? IIRC you also made a DIY version of such a speedbooster for your 400/2.8 over a year ago, is this Kipon version better? Thanks for the info.

It can be used with the FD 300mm f/2.8L as well.
The quality go´s down, I think there is some added spherical aberration.

I only made a very short comparison with my other "homemade" speed boosters. At first glimpse the looked about the same quality at that easy 0.7 factor.
I have used them more at x0.5 or around that, where the quality was very different, much more spherical aberration and with this special bokeh.

Thanks, Markus. So x0.5 was a DIY focal reducer turning it into a 200/1.4? Impressive to say the least. Did the modification of the lens mean you kept the whole original optical scheme or did you fi. change the rear element?

Yes, it is a very "special" rendering. I try to get Trioplan type bokeh (over corrected spherical aberration). The Kodak Aero Ektar 7inch on 4x5inch largeformat is something I would avoid to buy and work with - but the rendering is quite cool. A bit more entrance pupil would be good.
The glow is too much, but helps sometimes for female nude,

I've got a couple of potential candidate lenses, apart from the 400/2.8 and 300/2.8 FD a number of aero lenses from 70/1.6 to 300/5.6. Is the diy focal reducer something you are willing to share details of? The Kipon looks nice, but 500 euro for something to experiment with is not quite economical for me. Maybe my Telyt 560/6.8 could be turned into something more compact and faster. And I've got the optics of a 800/5.6 Astro Berlin lying around somewhere, might be fun..
