I see it somewhat differently than I think anyone here has expressed. I think there will be an A9 type of camera but it won't come out for a year or two. I think it will have a very high frame rate (10-12 fps), it will have excellent AF, fantastic video, but it won't have super high megapixels (probably something like 36mp when it comes out). It won't be small, but it will be substantially smaller than the Canon 1Dx (or successor) and the Nikon D5 for which it will be built to compete. Think something about the size of the Leica SL.
This will be the Sony sports and wildlife camera and the reason that I don't think it will be announced this year and probably not even next year is that I think they need to make quite a few advances with their on sensor phase detect AF, and the camera won't have full usefulness without the development of a few lenses anyway. It will be a capable sports and wildlife camera, it will also be great for events and a quite decent all around camera.
This will leaves Sony with a five camera line up. A crop sensor a6XXX series camera, a A7s series camera that specializes in video, an A7 series camera, and A7r series camera (which will always be the the high megapixel camera), and the A9 series camera.
In the meantime, I do expect them to release one more A99 II A mount camera to tide people over who would want the A9, but I am not sure of that. I do think the A9 will spell the end of the A mount. Another reason I think the A9 won't come until 2017 and more likely 2018....Show more →
I think the part about the A9 not being a mega-pixel monster is bang-on. Speed will be a priority. I'm just not sure it's a year or two away. Sony has probably been working on this now for almost 18 months already. It's just not clear how the earthquake has impacted this kind of product and how challenging it is for Sony to get their PDAF tracking to an acceptable level.
As you say though, new E-mount telephoto lenses are going to be required for an A9 to capture any sports and wildlife market share. Which reminds me... I thought I saw a report that the new 70-200 was not a fast focusing lens which would seem at odds with where we think Sony might be heading. Although I'm guessing a 100-400 would be more of a staple in this market segment.
