and while i know there are Leica lenses that are smaller - are you going to fork over Leica prices for an FE lens?

I don't think Leica lenses are expensive because they are a compact design...I think they are expensive because of their name.

well, you're more jaded than i am - their higher price is likely due to a lot of factors other than simply the name, notably: designed and manufactured to much higher standards, factories located in regions with a higher cost of labor/production, and fewer units produced.

Yes I'm sure they are produced to higher standards, but so are a lot of other lenses...but your two other points have nothing to do with the lens quality.

actually your full statement was:

and your point was (as i took it) that the lenses that Sony released were basically DSLR designs with the mount changed and HENCE they are DSLR-sized.

do you have any specific examples of "large" Sony lenses that were simply DSLR designs with the mount changed. or, put another way, examples of large Sony lenses that are large because Sony was in a rush to get them out the door, as you assert.

there is a common theme among the "i have never bought a sony lens and sony lenses are huge" crowd that the lenses are big

My comment to your renewed attempts to purposely misinterpret made statements and to annoy: blocked. Not worth my time.

YOU were discussing EXPENSIVE, which is why I spoke to pricing issues.

I'll take that as you have ZERO examples of Sony releasing any FE lens in the last 3 yrs that was simply a re-mounted version of a DSLR lens.

I'm not in favor of detests the purpose idea. Too many options for these cameras and you just need to pick your poison . I don't mind a few big lenses and I bought Sony for other reasons than size and weight
This is exactly my sentiment. I didn't buy the A7RII for the size and weight advantage. However, my shoulders do appreciate the lighter load of carrying the Sony setup for more than 8 hours rather than the gripped Canon 5DMKIII. I'm looking forward more to a third revision of the A7R than the first version of A9.

p.3 #8 · p.3 #8 · My take on Sony and New camera and lenses and what is really happening

I see it somewhat differently than I think anyone here has expressed. I think there will be an A9 type of camera but it won't come out for a year or two. I think it will have a very high frame rate (10-12 fps), it will have excellent AF, fantastic video, but it won't have super high megapixels (probably something like 36mp when it comes out). It won't be small, but it will be substantially smaller than the Canon 1Dx (or successor) and the Nikon D5 for which it will be built to compete. Think something about the size of the Leica SL.

This will be the Sony sports and wildlife camera and the reason that I don't think it will be announced this year and probably not even next year is that I think they need to make quite a few advances with their on sensor phase detect AF, and the camera won't have full usefulness without the development of a few lenses anyway. It will be a capable sports and wildlife camera, it will also be great for events and a quite decent all around camera.

This will leaves Sony with a five camera line up. A crop sensor a6XXX series camera, a A7s series camera that specializes in video, an A7 series camera, and A7r series camera (which will always be the the high megapixel camera), and the A9 series camera.

In the meantime, I do expect them to release one more A99 II A mount camera to tide people over who would want the A9, but I am not sure of that. I do think the A9 will spell the end of the A mount. Another reason I think the A9 won't come until 2017 and more likely 2018.

As much as I would like to see an A9 now rather then later, I think Steve has outlined the more probable scenario.

Another aspect of this is Sony Support. If you are going to compete in the 1DX2/D5 realm you better have solid support. None of them are perfect but you seem to read about far more Sony horror stories then with Canikon. As a 1D series owner since 2004 and CPS member it's definitely a concern before I consider spending $5K+ on a pro body.

Interesting thread - passionate, divided, yet with touches of consensus.

I think the part about the A9 not being a mega-pixel monster is bang-on. Speed will be a priority. I'm just not sure it's a year or two away. Sony has probably been working on this now for almost 18 months already. It's just not clear how the earthquake has impacted this kind of product and how challenging it is for Sony to get their PDAF tracking to an acceptable level.

As you say though, new E-mount telephoto lenses are going to be required for an A9 to capture any sports and wildlife market share. Which reminds me... I thought I saw a report that the new 70-200 was not a fast focusing lens which would seem at odds with where we think Sony might be heading. Although I'm guessing a 100-400 would be more of a staple in this market segment.

How big is the sports and wildlife market? Does it make sense for Sony to attempt this market give two established companies already dominating?

A question about this for my education, please: What camera body (not lens) features are unique to sports and wildlife yet not so applicable to the general camera market (at the price points we're talking about)? Thx

Low resolution needed for fast fps is the sport's camera trademark; most general cameras are higher resolution.

None, it's just a matter of priorities and how much you want spend on those features. There's going to be a cost associated with no lag in the viewfinder, high FPS with AF tracking, better weather resistance, larger batteries for longer life, etc, etc.
