I had read that hummingbirds eat tiny insects as part of their diet. However, I had never seen this behavior until the other day. I was watching this male and all of a sudden he started to fly into the foliage . Low and behold, he got himself a very tiny bug.

It is the very tiny white thing at the end of the beak in the last 2 shots.

As always your nits and crits are most appreciated.

I've also seen them snatch tiny bugs out of the air. Great job capturing this behavior, beautiful shots as always.

I've never seen the beak actually open, these are really great shots. I'm going to take a guess and say it was a bit cloudy or under a lot of foliage? It really makes the colors nice and without the glare that pops up because of the direct sunlight.
Were you shooting these freehand or on a tripod?
Between Ted and yourself, I don't think I've ever seen these so clear and colorful, except for some other types of Hummers I think that were from South America, I saw once here.

I'd be happy to get one shot that was half as good as these, fantastic work !

I never knew they did this either until I saw them hovering over a pond we have at the edge of our property. I was curious to see what they were doing, darting all around like that. Lo and behold they were catching tiny bugs. Who knew?? Very well done capturing this behavior!
