p.1 #1 · p.1 #1 · Canon 6D and TC's question

I purchased a 6D and since I have the new 100-400 ver 2 I thought I could use the 1.4X TCIII with it.
I noticed the camera is locked on Manual Focus.

The 100-400 with 1.4X on the 1DX was just fine.

I placed the 300mm Ver2 with 2.0X TCIII on the 6D and could focus at F8 and F11, didn't try any higher F stops.

I thought it was odd that the 6D stayed in manual focus (labeled on the top panel) with the 100-400 wide open but would focus stopped down with the 300 and 2X.

Any comments would be appreciated.
I thought the 6D and 100-400 would make a nice light weight combo.

You're confusing things here. The 6D can autofocus with any lens that has a maximum aperture of f/5.6 or larger. That means a lens that can't go larger than that...but of course it will autofocus at any aperture you set it to as long as the lens itself is f/5.6 or faster. The 300mm is a f/2.8 lens + 2x TC = a f/5.6 lens. The 100-400 + the 1.4x is at f/8, and therefore we lose AF (I use a 6D as well).

OK, thanks guys. I missed that part of the manual (which I was reading before purchasing the camera).
It sure would have saved some weight in the field.

I think your best bet for lightweight with AF at f/8 would be the newly released 80D.

Just for the record....current Canon cameras that can AF with an f/8 lens:
5D3
1DX
5DS/R
7D2
Those 4 use the centre point only and can use 4pt expansion to assist the centre point.

80D - can use just the centre point with most f/8 combos, has a bonus 27pt AF with 2 very specific combos: 100-400II + 1.4TCIII and 200-400 + 2xTCIII

1DX2 - can AF with all of its 61 AF points at f/8

One final note, a lens always autofocuses with the lens wide open. So the 300 2.8 and 2xTC even when stopped down to f/22 still does its AF at f/5.6 and then immediately stops down to take the shot.
f/4 lenses with 2xTCs and f/5.6 lenses with 1.4TCs AF at f/8.

Some 3rd party lenses like Sigma 150-600 that is actually f/6.3 wide open trick the cameras and pretend they are at f/5.6 so AF is possible like a f/5.6 combo.

On a political note....Over on the dark side (at least on my D500) Nikon claims only a select few points can AF at f/8 but the camera actually allows you to try to AF with all the 53 points and you can still use the zone and expanded modes....I wouldn't mind Canon letting us at least try to AF with all the points as Nikon does. My D500 can AF with a far corner point with an f/8 combo in decent light so these manufacturer restrictions are not black and white.

I wonder if the thing that prevents the 6D from focussing higher than 5.6 is just a bit of software. The camera is so rock solid at focussing in low light surely f8 would be possible?

I should add that all previous 1 series cameras could also AF with f/8 combos. Both the 1D and 1Ds lines.

There are some 3rd party TCs that don't report correctly to the camera that the TC is there. With those people have been able to have AF. I don't know exactly which ones they are.
You can also tape off a couple of the contact pins on the TC and the camera won't "see" the TC but when I've tried that the results weren't good.

Sure it would be possible, but it would not be good, just like putting a non-reporting TC on it would not be good.

There is a reason why Canon does not allow it on certain cameras, and that is because owners would then complain about the poor AF.

If you want a camera that will AF decently at f8, then buy the ones specifically designed to do so.

The 6D (a wonderful camera overall) is a bit of a disaster with AI Servo tracking so I can't imagine it would do very well with an f/8 combo anyway.

6D is great for macro photography. similar to 5D3. 6D works better in
low light. would never try extender on 6D.

p.1 #13 · p.1 #13 · Canon 6D and TC's question

I always like to have 2 cameras while out shooting for the newspaper so I don't have to stop and change lenses.
I am spoiled by the 1DX. I also had a 5D2 and waited for the 5D3 to drop below $2K only to find most of the 1DX features that I use are not available on the 5D3.
I looked into the 5DSR since it had a lot of the features I use but it wouldn't go above 6400 and when most guys shoot at 3x the usual shutter speed that wouldn't help either.
So I picked a refurbished 6D and forgot to look at f8.
Not a problem since I'll use it for the wider angle lens camera of the two I am carrying.
Thanks for all of the replies!
