Super set, Kirk! I'm really glad for you that you've been able to upgrade your gear over time, but you've demonstrated over a long period of time that your skills and eye for composition are what allow you to create compelling images, regardless of which camera and lens you're using. Looking forward to seeing more of your work with any camera .
You are so kind Mitesh, and your words are so encouraging and deeply appreciated my friend. Thanks for your terrific set of Black Bear images, I thoroughly enjoyed the whole series.
Late to the party, hope all the snacks aren't all gone. Fabulous shots Kirk and it appears the mating of the D500 and 500 prime is a perfect one for those in flight shots you do so well. I am still curious how you feel it holds up to the higher MP Nikon for IQ. There is no question the tracking is wonderful but once it acquires how does it perform?

Thanks for being fashionably late Eric... well played.
I was very close to ordering the new 200-500 lens with the D500 but decided to hold off a bit. I still might get it because it's performance is impressive and having the zoom capability on the crop sensor is needed at times. That being said... the D500 has raised the performance level and keeper rate of my older 500 f/4 (non VR) to a whole new level. I still prefer the RAW files of my D810 which are remarkable IMO, but the D500's IQ is still very, very good. I'm so pleased with the AF acquisition and tracking of this camera, it's not perfect, but it is amazing.

What a fantastic set, Kirk! All that praise and the defections makes it very tempting to get the D500.

Many thanks Amit. I don't know if it's worth defecting for... but us Nikon shooters are thrilled Nikon finally produced this fantastic successor to the long ago D300s.
Great shots! I've had my D500 and Tamron 70-200mm f/2.8 for less than a week and I have yet to go out and shoot. Damn job. I can't wait to try them! And hopefully pick up another lens sometime in 2017. Need to decide between the 300mm f/4E, Nikon 200-500mm, or Sigma 150-600mm Sport.
Kirk,
I just my D500 late this week. I was using the D7100. I will be using the D500 with a Sigma 500 5.4 Prime. I will be using a tripod and a gimbal. I will be shooting Eagles in flight, can you provide me with a basic camera setup.I know the conditions will effect the setup. Thanks for any help.
Great set, Kirk. Congrats on nailing the bittern lifer, too. Great bird, sharp shot - even heavily cropped. The kit is killer good in your hands.
I'm happy with my Canon glass and 1DX / 1DX2 - but I've been disappointed with Canon's crop sensors like the 7D2. Wish they could deliver what you seem to be enjoying with your D500.

BTW, your pictures are awesome.....
Thanks,

Hi Sam. Not Kirk here but I thought I'd share the best resource I found for setting up the D500 when I got mine in the summer. I am a Canon shooter so had to learn everything. You should have a bit easier time.
