p.1 #1 · p.1 #1 · Three from Abiqua

I made my first visit to Abiqua Falls a couple of weeks ago with a friend. It really is a beautiful place and the hike is actually kind of fun (if you do it right - when the trail branches stay to the left!). Here are three compositions with some different foregrounds. Any thoughts are welcome.

#2 is interesting. Nice composition lines between the rock and bottom of falls

Hey Kyle,

What cool and refreshing images these are. I like all of these, perhaps #3 a bit better.

I think I would have tried just a slightly longer shutter speed is all. Most of the water movement is great in both, but in the waterfall itself I think a slightly longer shutter speed could have made the falls themselves look a little better.

Did you try a vertical with the composition of #1? That might have been cool too.

Anyway, good work here.

Thank you very much Jim. I do have a vertical composition of #1, I may add it later. Overall it ends up a little unbalanced to my eye. I completely agree about the shutter speed and it was a lesson I have reinforced in my mind. I took some extra exposures at a faster speed to make sure I had detail in the water, but I didn't take any slower ones. Since I had shot three images of each for focus blending, I merged them into a smart object and averaged them to fake a longer exposure on the water.

Very nice set, liked the composition in all three, enjoyed seeing them and I like the waterfalls the way they are shown in your photos.

Hey Kyle,

Yeah I have learned that too about bracketing shutter speeds. I usually try to always take a shot down in the 1 sec range as I am doing my shooting even though I rarely ever like the look from that long of an exposure. But sometimes if the water is moving faster then normal, sometimes a longer then expected shutter speed is needed. It's kind of like when I am shooting landscapes with the sky, I usually end up bracketing (if you will) with the polarizer. 3 shots, one at max setting, one at a middle setting and one at minimum. Just because in the field it's often really difficult to tell by the small 3" display what I will like best. It's just better to bracket the looks, and decide back at home which shot to work from.

Did you try using a Median Blend to smooth out the water with multiple shots? That can work to create a longer shutter speed look.

Nice set. The first comp is my favorite, the other two feel like they need a bit more room above the falls. The colours are just a bit over saturated to my eye, especially the red/orange on the cliff wall.

Yep - that's exactly what I did using the exposures I'd planned for focus bracketing. It was worse before :-)
