Can you confirm that ring does not include stop numbers or markings? I am also looking for one but without marking this can be a pain.

Good Luck with the purchase Greg.

Hi Muhammad,

Actually, this filter has ND markings.
Here is a photo of it already mounted on the drop-in filter holder:

FYI, Canon's drop-in filter holder comes with a screw-in 52mm UV filter. I wish this was the holder supplied with the lens instead of the gel filter holder...

Thanks great news. Q & A on the amazon item page are saying otherwise. Probably newer version has these markings.

Finally got around to test that Hoya vari ND filter and... I messed up big time! As I was rushing to get the ND filter that fits the drop-in holder, I didn't check if it fits "inside" the lens! Until today. It is about 1/16" to thick. From the beginning, I thought that that slot is big enough to fit any filter. What a rookie mistake

So, it is a no go. DO NOT BUY IT! I will be trying to get a vari filter that fits but for now, I will be using BW filter that Rob recommended.

Sorry for the trouble and I hope nobody ordered it yet...

You can always (carefully) file the filter to fit.

I did that with a IR filter to use with an old 300 2.8 manual focus lens in the drop in filter holder. Some filters are cheap enough that you can buy a couple if needed.

I recommend you stay with high quality solid ND filters rather than trying to get a vari ND that will fit. You can either get an extra screw in holder to change fast, or just un screw the filter to change it.

B+W makes both single coated and multi coated solid ND filters, and I think the extra money is worth it for multi coated for this application. Internal reflections can occur between the sensor and any flat surface in the lens chain, and multi coated will minimize the chances.

Below is a link to one density of B+W multi coated. The B+W are made of brass, and thus should not easily get stuck in the aluminum threads of the Canon 52mm screw in holder.

Since there wouldn't be much to file down, it is very tempting but I still have time to return this filter...

The main reason for me to have a vari ND filter is to have just one filter without adding additional cost of another filter and holder. At the moment, I can't decide which filter will work best in the long run. 3 stop, 6 stop, 8 stop? and vari ND filter would solve this issue perfectly...

Any Updates on a variable ND? I have had luck only with Breakthrough’s Solid ND filters. Only after filing down all the nubs around the sides. The filter is made of brass so it wasn’t too hard to do.
The filter Cross threads incredibly easily so i will be needing to purchase more drop in filter holders for quick swapping. BUT A VARIABLE ND LIKE CANON HAS FOR THE RF WOULD BE NICE!
