I need a recommendation on which manufacturer makes a 52mm ND filter that will fit a Canon's filter holder.

Since there is not much space between the filter and the holder, when the filter is screwed in, not all filters fit.

If you have experience in this matter, I would love to hear from you!

Best would be a variable ND filter but I think it is impossible at this time

Why would you want this? Up to you obviously, but just curious.

Video is one reason. I had them for my Nikkors, but don't know about the Canons.

To have better control on aperture while shooting video.
To shoot a "smooth" video you need a slower shutter speed, either 1/60s or 1/125s depending on your frame rate. Shooting at ISO 100 and at 1/125 maximum, you are ending up with crazy high apertures like f/22 or even higher. As you can imagine, this has its own cons There are times, that you won't be able to shoot video with these settings without blowing up the highlights...

Because Canon isn't smart enough to set up the digital bodies for ISO 25 or lower.

Either Breakthrough Photography or Formatt-Hitech Firecrest filters will work fine. These companies both produce great ND filters. Breakthrough is slightly more neutral with better build quality. Formatt is a little cheaper and has a better selection, with filters available every stop from 1 to 10 stops in 52mm. in 72, 77 & 82 Formatt also has 13 & 16 stop densities.

I use B+W 52mm SC 103 Solid Neutral Density 0.9 Filter (3 Stop) and the B+W 77mm SC 106 Solid Neutral Density 1.8 Filter (6 Stop) and they work great.

Here is the 6 stop link

I also have a Singh Ray Mor Slo 5 stop they installed into a 52mm drop in for me. I think breakthrough Photography said they could do that too if I recall. You have to provide the drop in CPL version, in turn the dial does nothing like with CPL version.

I like the Singh Ray a little more but it is pricey

I use Hoya Pro-1 with great success. They make them with various strengths.

So, can anyone one of you post some links to your videos using these and the big lenses and ND filters? I am curious because I don't do much video at all and would love to see how these work.

Thanks...Al

Here is one where I used the 3 stop filter with a 800mm. You do not notice it in the video, what it is used for is videos with a shallow depth of field in bright conditions, then you will need to use ND filters. This allows you to keep shutter speeds down for the best look for video.

How will you be able to turn it for you desired strength. You will have to set it first then drop in I assume?

Yes, but I think it is still better than having 2 or 3 different ND filters that I would need to unscrew if I need a different ND stop. With vari ND filter, I will just pop it out half way, adjust and drop back in No need to carry/handle more than one filter, and it is always screwed in. Definitely a plus when shooting on the beach...

It is a 1.5-9 stop Hoya filter: http://amzn.to/28X2HOK

I didn't have time to test the image quality though...

Can you confirm that ring does not include stop numbers or markings? I am also looking for one but without marking this can be a pain.

Good Luck with the purchase Greg.

Really nice. Better than a photo. Which camera body did you use for that video?
