Hey all,

I'm in my fourth year now with Ballet Chicago, and it just seems to keep getting better with them. Here are a few pics from their spring performance at the Harris Theatre in downtown Chicago. Comments always welcome.

Fine set. I really like them all but I keep looking at #1 over and over.

I shoot my daughters ballet and love seeing yours.

Thanks! That's where it all started for me, shooting my daughters' dance recitals.

Excellent, as usual, Ron. What shutter speed, at what ISO, were you able to get there? Not a hint of foot motion blur in any of these.

Thanks, Jim! Definitely an interesting set. The girl is supposed to be flirting with the soldier, playful, fun and endearing. He's supposed to be the rugged soldier, but totally taken with her, so it's a conflict of pretending to be a rugged soldier, and then giving in to those moments of being completely smitten with her. The dancer pulls it off perfectly.

Thanks, Steve. As you know, the key is catching that peak moment when their movement stops for just a second (or at least 1/250 of a sec). Amitava Sartar, who shoots the Houston Ballet, insisted to me that he shot performances at 1/125 sec. Still not sure I believe him as the lighting for Houston Ballet is so gorgeous and so generous for photographers (I was shooting at 1/400 and 1600 ISO back then).

I shot these in and around 1/250, ISO 2500 and wide open. It would vary depending on where they were on the stage but fortunately the Harris Theater has halfway decent lighting. I've still never seen lighting like I always saw with the Houston Ballet. Totally miss that.

Steve, here are a couple samples of Houston Ballet where the lighting was so immaculate.

1. I had so much light here, I was shooting at f/4.5, 1/500 and ISO 1600

No. My last dance concert was shot at 1/250 at ISO 4000.

Amitava Sartar, who shoots the Houston Ballet, insisted to me that he shot performances at 1/125 sec.

If he did that successfully, it seems that he would only be able to capture one dancer at that peak. Anyone else in the frame would show motion, don't you think?

Wonderful set - I always enjoy your dance shots and these are excellent (as always).
Plus - those two Huston ballet shots are great, #1 is captivating!
