An impromptu image of the mother during a recent daughter-headshot session.

Thanks in advance for your lighting and processing-related comments.

Light and shadow are nice in this one. The tilt of the head is a small negative for me.

Agree tilt of head is a small negative.
The lighting seems to suit her facial features very well.
Love the color version, the blue eyes add so much to the image.

Chuck, thanks for posting! Without knowing more about your style of portraiture lighting, I can only give you feedback based on my style. I'm pretty confident the mother will be very happy with this! I love the soft smile that keeps her eyes so wide open.

The processing of the face and arm works for me in the B&W version, but the hot spots really show up in the color version. My style removes those hot spots.

In the B&W version, on the other hand, the hairlight is too hot for my style. I like it to be more subtle, which is exactly how it appears in the color version. But when I say "too hot" in the B&W version, I mean by maybe half a stop or so. It's close. And while we're on the topic of the hairlight, I prefer for the hair light not to hit the cheek that's in the shadow.

While these are nits, they are small nits. Great job!

Too much head tilt as mentioned. My daughter-in-law is prone to extreme head tilt and I constantly have to tell her to straighten up a little.

The loop lighting is a good choice and her facial shape can stand the broad lighting, but I think short lighting would be more flattering.

I agree with Ron, hair light/kicker is a little hot. I'd rotate her towards the camera just a tad. Since is was impromptu, I'll let the sleeveless wardrobe slide, but I'd fix the slip/bra strap that is showing.

I think it would be well worth getting her back in the studio for a more formal and extensive shoot.

This is not bad at all. Your subject has a lot of potential. Just a few adjustments and you could get some striking photos.

My thoughts echo those above but I have one observation that was bothering me on a portrait I did of a girl many years ago, the crease in the subject's arm/chest, I was debating with myself whether to clone it out and asked a female colleague if she would rather it was removed if it had been a shot of her and she gave me a "are you nuts? Of course I want it removed", so I did, so I wonder if anyone feels the same way about this shot? Leave it in or take it out? Cheers, Bill.

Guys, I really appreciate you all taking the time for such thoughtful comments. I'm playing around with a few ideas and trying to break out a bit, experiment, reassess and sort of take stock of things, habits, etc.

It's very helpful to have your eyes involved during this rethinking phase.

Many thanks and all the best,

Chuck

I may reply more fully to specific points friends are offering, not to justify anything, just to discuss. In this case, Bill, you're asking a specific question of us all and I don't want to seem like I'm ignoring it.

I did tone it down a lot. The angle of the light sometimes exaggerates shadows so harshly I just don't think it's representative of the subject's true appearance. As noted, this was a very off the cuff shot and pretty much all I changed from the headshot lighting was to turn off the fill. Her daughter's shots are lit up in a big way. So in this case, one light went dark and I really didn't adjust much as far as angle or pose (re: dmacmillan's broad lighting observation) and the crease was one element that became prominent.

Anyway, I didn't feel it was necessary at all to eliminate it - the woman is gorgeous in every way a person can be, but I did choose to take the edge off because the lighting made it appear inaccurate. Perhaps I didn't go far enough.

I, like you, am very interested in other's thoughts on the matter.

Thanks again,

C

Thanks for taking the time to reply Chuck, I really like your shot, I neglected to mention that point, sorry, yeah I find myself debating whether to remove such creases all the time, or as you say just toning them down, I suppose it would make sense maybe just to leave as is and let the subject tell me if she would like it removed, cheers, Bill.

Both are nice but the color adds a nice liveliness to the second. The warm tones really work well and there is a nice harmony between the lighter and darker areas.
