My thoughts echo those above but I have one observation that was bothering me on a portrait I did of a girl many years ago, the crease in the subject's arm/chest, I was debating with myself whether to clone it out and asked a female colleague if she would rather it was removed if it had been a shot of her and she gave me a "are you nuts? Of course I want it removed", so I did, so I wonder if anyone feels the same way about this shot? Leave it in or take it out? Cheers, Bill.
I may reply more fully to specific points friends are offering, not to justify anything, just to discuss. In this case, Bill, you're asking a specific question of us all and I don't want to seem like I'm ignoring it.
I did tone it down a lot. The angle of the light sometimes exaggerates shadows so harshly I just don't think it's representative of the subject's true appearance. As noted, this was a very off the cuff shot and pretty much all I changed from the headshot lighting was to turn off the fill. Her daughter's shots are lit up in a big way. So in this case, one light went dark and I really didn't adjust much as far as angle or pose (re: dmacmillan's broad lighting observation) and the crease was one element that became prominent.
Anyway, I didn't feel it was necessary at all to eliminate it - the woman is gorgeous in every way a person can be, but I did choose to take the edge off because the lighting made it appear inaccurate. Perhaps I didn't go far enough.
I, like you, am very interested in other's thoughts on the matter.
Thanks again,
C
