p.1 #1 · p.1 #1 · Baseballl sportraits of my son

My son will be 7 next month and is an avid multi-sport athlete. He's finally to the point where he responds well to positing instruction so I want to try to take something like these each season for his many sports.

Looking for CC if you have any!

note: I wasn't sure if I should put this in the sports forum and I don't have a high enough post count yet to cross-post but since it's posed shots I opted to go people.

thanks Ron, I moved him slightly for that one and managed to get more light under the hat which helped

disappointing how soft these look once resized down to 1000px on the long side

Are you resharpening after you downsample the files? All digital images need to be sharpened after downsampling, but usually not too much. If you're using Bicubic Automatic interpolation in your downsampling, it's supposed to apply some sharpening on the way down, but you never know exactly what it's doing, and whatever it does is done globally. Here's your second image resharpened a bit.

Chris, they do look a bit soft. It would help if the exif data was intact so we could see how the camera was set. SS, ap, ISO etc... Without more info to detail how the shot was setup it's hard to determine the cause. Strictly looking at #1, if your post processing was done correctly, I would start to question where the single AF point was positioned. If it were on the eyes (should have been, right?) then possibly there could be some front/back focusing in play.

I resize them with lightroom, if there are some additional settings that I'd benefit from using there please let me know. I find this more of a problem when I get the framing right in camera(minimal post crop), I assume scaling a 36mp image is a factor.

1. was shot at f1.8 in an attempt to blow out the busy background as much as possible, focus was on the eyes. I have other similar shots at f2.8 but I liked the posing on this one better.

2. this was shot at f2.8, focus on the eyes, and before scaling it was very very sharp

3. this was shot at f1.8, clearly trying to highlight the ball and take him out of focus. It was razor sharp on the ball lettering.

I'll try to get some 100% crops.

I'm having the same issue with my photos. I export from Lightroom as well. Images are night and day diffferent when viewing on here

For the hell of it I re-exported with sharpen for screen set to normal. It made a subltle difference, probably worthwhile if I'm going to scale it down this much. I also took a 100% crop of the eyes and exported without scaling, pretty sure I nailed the focus at least in #2
