At the last minute I grabbed a macro lens on the way to a local wetlands area, Glad I did. Came across this Texas Horned Lizard right before sunset.

They used to be pretty common when I was growing up in the 50's. Every boy had caught at least one. Now they are quite rare and are listed by the Fish and Wildlife as threatened in Texas.

Growing up in Texas, a very long time ago, as kids we called them horney toads. No one gave a second thought to the name. It just referred to his horns. They were also numerous. Now I believe their threatened.
