I often talk of how lucky I am....but there is no better example than when my father told the story of being ready to be deployed to Japan during WWII as a soldier in a mortar brigade. As the life expectancy was about 30 seconds so many were trained yet they knew the likelihood they would return was slim. Right before deployment he got a sore throat and was put in the infirmary...remember antibiotics really didn't exist at the time...and within two weeks, and before he could be sent over, Hiroshima and Nagasaki were bombed and the war in the Pacific was over. It is a sobering thought to realize your whole being was dependent on something like that.
Anyway, I have good memories that are of more trivial things. Having watched Kim Wolhuter's Predators at War yesterday (not sure if that was intentional with Memorial Day today) I thought I'd put up some apex predators of both land and sky that certainly would make our Armed Forces proud.
Enjoy your day off and remember those that served and especially those that gave the ultimate sacrifice so that we could continue to live free.

Beautiful images and thanks for sharing your story. Your martial eagles win me over the lions, Eric. I am a little bias since I am from bird photography. Love your martial eagles by its majestic look and the big strong talons with its leg.

I love predators and you did a great job of showing what they do. Martial eagle shots are striking, and the lion dragging it's kill is definitely nature in action.

Great opener story Eric

Nice coverage of predators from above and on ground, some very very intense images
I just watched the video of the Silverback that had the unfortunate visit of a 4yr old and how it cost him his life, unfortunate at times how life changes in a split second and there is loss and a life saved.

Thanks Tam....as much as I love the cats, a martial eagle is one of the sightings I always hope for a seldom get when I go to Africa. Certainly this one was by the best I have ever had.

Thanks Reko, the power and majesty of most of the predators is a real drawing card...but when you can do it from the air it adds another dimension (no pun intended).

Thanks Karl...the story of that gorilla and the child has been front and center. One needs a course and license to learn how to operate a motor vehicle....but to have and take care of a child, no experience necessary.

Well for certain, Truman's decision played a major role....timing in life is everything. I often think of the poor souls who perished in the days before. No one said life (or death) was fair.

Thanks Birdie...I'm not sure what the plan is but I know I don't ever take for granted what I have experienced; and the fragility of life is never lost on me.

Very moving story...and images. Very compelling and intense captures showing that it's a tough and brutal world out there.

The more time I spend in 'nature', the more I appreciate how many links are in the chain there are and reflect on what those links can or might mean in human terms. It's very humbling. It sure makes me appreciate what I have...and how quickly it can be lost.
