When carrying lenses on a strenuous hike, a compact telephoto is greatly desired. The Zeiss Sonnar 100/3.5 fits the bill. It's small, well-built, inexpensive and has great IQ.
It took me a few tries to get great copies of the FE 70-200/4G and CY 100/3.5 lenses. The Sony 70-200/4G has its sweet spot around 100-150mm so it was a challenging test for the Sonnar 100/3.5 prime.
The results are:- At f/5.6: The Sonnar 100/3.5 has better resolution/contrast at the extreme edges, but has a slight dip at mid-frame. Both lenses are very similar at center.
- At f/8: Both zoom and prime are very close. The Sonnar is still slightly ahead at the very corners but they seem very much alike throughout the rest of the field. Similar to f/5.6, the zoom is still tiny better at mid field.
There is more LaCA on the 100/3.5 images but I prefer its rendering and bolder colors.
