I went on a whale watch with a friend last week down on Monterey bay. We were hoping to see orcas which are hanging out in the bay in decent numbers, but this day was the only one where they couldn't find them. Oh well. Otherwise, great day with dozens of humpback whales, probably fifty otters in Moss Landing, plus lots of birds and other goodies. It was grey and overcast the entire time, not much I can do there, but I did the best I could. Everything was shot with a sigma sport.

Welcoming committee...basically they don't care..

This was interesting...an albatross taking off. First time I've seen one of these, and they are huge birds with up to a six foot wingspan.

In Moss Landing we ran across a group of sea lions. They let us approach reasonably close...

On to the whales. We saw one blue whale, and tons of humpbacks. This guy was not very happy about something, jumping up to make a big splash and noise underwater...From a pretty good distance unfortunately.

Thanks. The bay is usually grey, especially in the morning when we went out. The advantage of the morning is that the bay is usually more calm as the winds tend to pick up in the afternoon after the sun starts to heat things up a bit. I was disappointed not to have seen the orcas as I've never seen them before, but it was a great show regardless.
