p.1 #1 · p.1 #1 · US Retailers Can No Longer Ship Sony Products to Canada

It seems that Sony USA has now banned shipments of Sony gear to Canada from US retailers, as of last week. I guess Sony Canada is enjoying the huge margins they are getting here now that the Canadian dollar has recovered significantly since their last price increase, and don't want more competitive US stores to get in on the action.

How is this going to affect you as a Canon shooter?

It doesn't affect me at all as a Canon shooter, but it does make it more expensive for me to buy new gear as a Sony shooter...

Interesting. I did not know this. One more reason for those of us near the border to use the numerous US mailbox services.... What are the warranty implications once the gear is in Canada - not honoured by Sony Canada?

Today in the BHPhoto site I put a GM 24-70 preorder in my cart and went all the way to the last step of the checkout process and didn't have any issues with a Canadian ship-to address. I might actually pull the trigger soon.

Just be careful - if you're outside the US they charge your credit card right away (I think) but when stock comes in your order will be cancelled and you will lose about 5-6% on the currency exchange charges when they refund your order.

If you try it with something that is actually in stock, you get this:

This does seem rather petty and hardly worth the time of a large corporation ... however it is only fair to say that Sony (as with most manufacturers in our field of interest) held their Canadian prices below relevant exchange rate equivalence for far longer than their previously existing stocks levels would probably have justified. So as Canadian residents we did have a benefit there ... as a number of our cross border colleagues noticed to their advantage as well.
Sony do seem to be adopting these rather silly trivial policies ... my dealer tells me that they now do not allow any discounts whatsoever ... not even to store senior personnel whom it might be in Sony's interest to have specially knowledgable and enthused about their products when dealing with customers.

The assumption here has been that this has been Sony doing this to protect Sony's interests.

What if Sony was doing this to protect its authorized dealers in Canada?

And as far as Sony not offering discounts to its own staff, I'd suggest that 90% of those items were resold within days.

Maybe Sony is learning from recent past episodes and trying to get control of things.

I'm not a huge fan of big corporations buying our govt and rigging the game in their favor, but I don't have a problem with businesses protecting themselves and their partners from being gamed either.

US customers got reamed by our Supreme Court that allowed non-competitive trade practices...does Canada allow price fixing by the manufacturer?

No, it's prohibited by federal law; retailers can set their own selling prices, but they voluntarily submit to the practice of Minimum Advertised Pricing as they don't want to risk angering the manufacturers.

Thanks... good point.

However, as of today, buying something like the GM 24-70 through B&H with import fees and GST converted to CAD is actually a bit more than buying in Canada (buying out of province and paying GST).

Maybe we'll just see more US retailers offering "Open Box" products to bypass the rule, rather than cut off a sizable portion of their business...

I tried to purchase the 70-300 from B&H recently for shipping to Canada and got denied.

Somewhat related, I got in touch with B&H customer service last week and asked whether my Batis 18 pre-order would be affected by this new Sony policy and they told me that "there appears to be no issue with shipping this lens to Canada."

Now if only it would show up in stock...

This happened to me when I ordered the Batis 18 then was told they are not allowed to ship Zeiss to Canada

I was specifically concerned about this and that's why I got in touch with them to ask specifically about my Zeiss Batis 18 order.

Based on what I was told, they will have one very unhappy customer if they end up cancelling my order once the lens comes into stock.

Not sure when you tried to order, but for what it's worth, I placed my pre-order several days before the new Sony policy went into effect.

Hopefully they will honor the order and stick to what their customer service rep told me.

Seems I can still add any Zeiss lens to my cart and ship it to Canada. Any more info on that?
