Please mention the cameras you're using this lens with-- it might make a difference. Does anyone with the A7rII have it yet who can weigh in?

Thats like saying problems with a Ford Escort could be solved by buying a Ferrari.
And you'd need a weightlifting course too.
Just about the most pointless suggestion possible.
Main thing is, both Canon and Nikon, and probably Sony themselves in the A series, have lenses which perform at least as well optically, and do better for af and price.

As far as the focus speed is concerned, no it is not a fast lens. If you haven't already tried, I would suggest upgrading the firmware in your camera to version 3.10. I think it makes some difference.

Optically I think it's a very decent lens for the money. I've compared it to my Minolta MD 50/2 and Rokkor MC 50/1.4 and the Sony is noticeably sharper and has more contrast at f2. At f5.6 to f8 the MD 50/2 has a little more bite, but it's pretty close. The only optical fault I can really see is the cyan colored loca at wider apertures, although even the FE55 is not free of this either.

I think focus speed is workable for portraits, though trying to capture kids running around is not going to work well. Also in really low light it will be best to focus manually to avoid the hunting that can happen.

In the 5 days I had this lens (shooting with it every day), I wasn't able to get a single usable picture of my son unless he was a quarter mile away. The only other reason I wanted AF was so I could take one-handed pictures of caught fish while I'm standing in waist deep rivers/creeks. Basically, this lens was a non-starter for me.
I'll wait and see if the lens and camera get updates that make it focus faster, but I'm not holding my breath.
This was all on A7.
28-70 kit will be here tomorrow, thanks to a sweet deal from Snapsy, and that'll work as needed perfectly. I already have good small primes for low light and bokeh.

Anyone tried an image of the stars with the 50/1.8?

Wonder what the coma is like?

I don't use or need a 50mm much but on occasion I might do a star shot. My legacy Nikon 50 has bad bad coma.

This could be tempting is it had decent coma. I know the 55mm does, just can't justify the cost for a lens I would rarley use.

Just saw the Lensrentals review and now I'm worried about my 55's variation...how should I test it? >_<

@sholt, Thank you! Your images show the FE 50/1.8 to be a winner, especially for $250. I have an ample supply of alt lenses, but something AF for one-handed casual shooting will be nice.

Are you happy with your copy? Don't test it. (If you want to test it, shoot a flat surface with detail, from a tripod, level, at a few apertures, at iso 100-- and compare to other sharp or not sharp lenses you have. Test a subject not too far away, and something far away.)

Indeed, I have an FL 55mm f/1.2 that I just love. But I'll probably pick up the FE 50 f/1.8 nine out of 10 times because it has AF.

+1
I have tested I think three copies of the FE55 on my A7r and was not very happy with the test results: Tilted plane of focus gave unsharp left side at wide aperture infinity shots. In actual shooting I have been quite happy with the results. On my A7RII it performs better, so the camera is part of the equation.

I can sadly attest to the rather lousy AF of this lens. Not just the slowness, but the noise, vibration and just the whole feeling using it. Just like the old Canon 50/1.8 ii and also like the Fuji 35/1.4, only the FE being slower. Undecided about performance, but not an enjoyable lens imo. This on an A7s, btw.

I can also attest to terrible AF on my A7 II. It's just dog slow, and sometimes has trouble locking focus too. I don't find it too loud, though..just a gentle whirring, and no vibration. It is definitely the worst aspect of the lens...it's bad enough to make me audibly say "come on" from time to time.

Optically, it's pretty good, though. Some samples, cross posted from the main image thread:

Wonderful images, Jordan.
Yeah, the optical performance is just great, it's too bad about the AF.

I popped into a local camera shop yesterday and spent a extensive amount of time trying out my A7II with a Metabones IV and MC-11 with various lenses, as well as a Sony FE 50mm f/1.8. I ended up grabbing the 50mm.

If I had to sum up my sentiments, I'd say that it is a lens of compromises, and I'm happy that Sony is offering cheap lenses with compromises to accompany the lenses without compromises that cost 4+ times as much.

The AF certainly isn't the best I've ever used, but it's not horrible. I'd say it's about the same as Nikon AF-D lenses in terms of sound and speed. It's not suited to sports, but it's also not incapable of tracking subjects. It may hunt a little sometimes, but I generally find it to be very accurate.

The IQ is great for an inexpensive lens. Centre sharpness is good at f1.8 and I think it has superb contrast and color. It reminds me a lot of the Nikon APS-C 35mm f1.8 G, which is the lens that got me into fast primes years ago. It has some vignetting, but I also kind of like a lens with a little natural vignetting. All told, it produces SOOC photos that I quite like the look of.

It seems to meter a lot darker than other lenses; I wouldn't be surprised if its transmission score on DXO ends up being above f2 when it's tested. Best way to combat this is to use the camera light profile in the camera and in Lightroom.

I mentioned comparing this along side the Metabones IV and the MC-11 because I was weighing getting one of those against getting the 50mm; MC-11 is priced identically. As unideal as the 50mm AF may be, it's still better than the AF offered by the adapters, even the MC-11 with Sigma lenses. One interesting note from my trials was that the ability of the adapters to pass through the IBIS was more of a limit than the AF. Neither the Metabones nor the MC-11 offered great AF-C, and both had acceptable AF-S with a range of Canon & Sigma lenses. PDAF was way better than CDAF, which hunted a lot and was super slow. The IBIS was unreliable on both, but way worse on the MC-11 -- it's what really killed my impression of it.

Here are some samples from my time with the 50mm so far:

Amazon warehouse has many used ones (I'm guessing returned lenses by unhappy buyers) for $211. Is it worth it and how is the warranty for those lenses? My camera is the original A7.

If Sony can't get a quick firmware update out so that it works as well on the A7II as it appears to work on the A7rII (I haven't had a chance to try one out on my camera yet, so that's hearsay)-- I think we'll see this lens quickly hit about $150 on the used market. Which is fine by me.

This particular launch seems like a misstep that isn't helping Sony's reputation for decision making. It hits on IQ, but AF should be good on all the mk2 bodies...
