I like them both too. I'm leaning toward the first but I think it's more because of the diminutive size of the heron in the second picture. Have you considered a crop that makes them a little equal-sized?
The more I look at it, the more the first seems 'textbook-ish' (in a good way) and the second seems more 'art-ish' (also in a good way). I'd be really curious to see the heron larger in that one.

Thanks guys! I was partial to #2, mainly because of the lighting, but I am now leaning towards #1 after listening to what you guys have to say. Really appreciate your input and views. I compete in a local photo association, so these tips and feedback are important to me. Thanks again!

Thanks Kim! Do you mean crop it tighter, like so?
Bingo. I was initially thinking a vertical composition but I do like this and appreciate the heron a little bigger. Now I can't decide on a favorite; I really do like 'em both!

Because of positioning/orientation/structure of the tree branch, I think a landscape fornat works better.

Nice to see these images worked in BW, although the color image is quite beautiful as well.
I lean towards the first. Second feels too small in the frame in the original monotone. The newer crop improves, IMO.
Nice work
